Saft CommentaryDon't pay for this crap! - Version: 12.0.2, 11/21/2009 12:33PM PST

I bought Saft some time ago (it was 'Saft for Tiger' then) and was not using it much. Now I wanted to use it on my new Snow Leopard system, so I paid for upgrade ($8). But I still can't register my demo of 'Saft for Snow Leopard', because Li Hao allows me to download 'Saft for Leopard' license only! To get newest version I HAVE TO UPGRADE AGAIN (another $8, which makes "UPGRADE" $1 more expensive than buying FULL LICENSE ($15).

I asked Li Hao about that, but he just ignores my emails. Now I am trying to get refund from PayPal.

I highly recommend 'Glims' and "Glimmer Blocker' duo to get full Saft replacement FOR FREE!

Eat my five bucks, Li Hao!

Saft ReviewI wish I hadn't paid for the upgrade - Version: 12.0.1, 11/12/2009 12:23PM PST

I have used and recommended Saft for years. While hesitant, I sprung for the upgrade to the Snow Leopard version when it was finally out of beta. This was a mistake.

With Glims now available for free, and superior in most ways but lacking ad blocking, the only reason I wanted to get Saft back on my system was to block ads. I am tired of seeing the same damned "I got ripped in 4 weeks" and countless phony Internet dating ads. I also had 4 years of carefully selected Saft ad blocking patterns built up. Why am I so disappointed?

Saft ad blocking no longer works properly.

It works if you try to load a single image directly. You'll get a Saft dialog in the Safari window which describes how Saft blocked the URL based on a given pattern. But there the ad sits in the middle of a web page, displayed as normal. This occurs through refresh, re-launch, cache reset, Saft settings wipe, and even a full Safari reset. As a Saft user for years, I know how it's supposed to work and now it does not. For the record, this is with the SIMBL plug-in install, running Safari in 64 bit mode. (The other methods cripple Safari, and are not an option.)

Why not just report this to the developer? Because I have reported issues and asked questions in the past and I've learned that you may, or may not, get a reply weeks later, and it will rarely be more than one terse sentence which may, or may not, be relevant to your topic. In other words, the message is now "go away." Message received.

I would no longer recommend paying for Saft. Good luck navigating his web site if you wanted to.

Instead, grab these: Glims and Safari AdBlocker. Together, they cover what Saft claims to do, they do it better (right click to kill bad Flash!), they don't require you to wait for new versions with every Safari update (working fine in Safari 4.0.4 today), and they are both free. Safari AdBlocker even includes the necessary SIMBL, whereas Saft couldn't even provide a link to the SIMBL web site.

One should know that the price of this product is now $15.00 and not $12.00 as shown on this site.

Saft ReviewThis version crashes on launch - Version: 12.0.0 Public Beta 4, 10/4/2009 03:49PM PST

I rely on Saft for two things principally: controlling where I wish to have a new tab open, and creating a special download folder each day. Now, then, this Public 4 beta version repeatedly crash instantly upon opening. I copied the gibberish (to me) in the crash notification and e-mailed to the developer. I have faith they'll get this done. Snow Leopard did put an end to input managers, and lots of developers of system tweaks are scratching their heads trying things to get their particular tweaks working through some other route. I rate Saft very high because of tradition, but his particular beta is problematical.

Saft Troubleshooting ReportNo GO for Public Beta 4 for me - Version: 12.0.0 Public Beta 4, 10/4/2009 12:21PM PST

Just got the update for Saft Public Beta 4. It won't load. When it loaded in, a pop up window said that Saft had unexpectedly quit and there was a message to be sent to Apple with reasons why it quit.

It should be noted here - since it isn't mentioned on the Saft web site - that this version does not work in OS X 10.6.x in its traditional mode as an Input Manager plug-in. This is probably an issue with how Snow Leopard works and may, or may not, be resolved in the future. But it doesn't help that the developer can't be bothered to explain that the only way to get Saft to work in 64 bit mode (and hence with Safari in Snow Leopard) is to use the Saft app as a Safari launcher. It's not his fault if Saft is forced to work this way by changes in the operating system, but he is culpable for not explaining this to us before we plunk down $15 for the new version.

I paid for it anyway because I am tired of going to the History menu every time I launch Safari to open the tabs from my previous session - and there is no knowing if Glims (which also opens previous tabs, among other things) will ever be updated for 10.6, given that it is a volunteer project distributed for free. The developers there have posted nothing on their web site to let us know either way.

All that said, this version of Saft is a beta and the Input Manager capability may be restored eventually - assuming it is even possible. In the meantime, it's no real hardship to replace Safari in the Dock with Saft - except that the Dock is just that much more crowded when Safari is running.

The point is well taken, though, that, beyond periodic updates for compatibility with new versions of Safari and the Mac OS, Saft has gained no features to enhance its value. In the meantime, Glims is cutting its water by providing many of the same functions and a good deal more, and that for free (and for voluntary donations). Saft has been a reliable product over the years but the developer should be wary of resting on his laurels. There is competition now for his market share and if he doesn't start trying harder to improve his product, he risks losing his customer base to younger, more energetic developers.

Saft ReviewNo longer worth it - Version: 12.0.0 Public Beta 2, 9/20/2009 08:42AM PST

Saft used to be pretty good - back in 2005 or so. Since then absolutely NO new features have been added and you always had to pay an upgrade price when the Mac OS was upgraded. Now Apple has made it more difficult for developers to plug into Safari and this is one of the main reasons Saft will quickly be a thing of the past. The usage of Saft as a Safari launcher was always a bad idea and now it seems that this is the way chosen by the developer to 'support' 64bit. Unfortunately it is a very convoluted way of handling it and it works poorly - unlike other programs like '1Password', which is an excellent example of how plugging into Safari in SL is still possible.

I would avoid this program - it has no future. It's better to wait for freeware alternatives like 'Glims' to catch up.

Saft CommentaryThere is a new 64-bit beta, but... - Version: 12.0.0 Public Beta 2, 9/19/2009 12:39PM PST

... it has at least one major bug. When I tried to add a rule to the list of blocked URLs, Safari immediately crashed. And that was in 84-bit mode, which is supposed to be more stable.

cheers dgkanter for digging a little deeper regarding the actual cost. i put my money forward, even though i might not be using saft until it makes 64-bit, but just so the developer sees folks like myself are still interested. i've not had issues with any version of saft in the past.
