Tried it several times on a 128 MB Smart card and it came up with a pathetic 14 photos.

When a hard drive failed, data rescue folks wanted thousands of dollars to retrieve the photos. Instead, I 'bought' Photorescue Wizard after the trial version showed photos from several months ago were still on >formatted< Compact Flash cards. Several gigs of photos were retrieved.
Using Photorescue on a G4 iMac with OS X 10.3.9, the app 'quit unexpectedly' at the end of retrieving photos from each card. Maybe that is the best method to clear the RAM of whatever junk was left from working with the card.
Photos will need to be renamed once the photos are retrieved if the default numbering system is not ok. And even though Photorescue 'knows' the date of the original photo (if the camera's date was set correctly), the date used was the current session date. It could easily make that the date when the photos are rescued. EXIF info was preserved.
On the 'ordering' side- if the company you have to send payment to has an 'office' in your state, you will be charged sales tax, even when the software company is overseas.

Works Great...my daughter came back from a 4 week summer trip and we could not download a 512 XD card. Used this program and it saved the day.

I assume most users of PhotoRescue Wizard get to use this app because of an urgent need. I had heard about it before, so when my Sony DCS-F717 "misplaced" 36 images in a memory stick so they could not be located neither directly by the camer, nor via a cardreader connected to my Cube 450 running OS X 10.3.7. Funny enough a single image taken on the previous day was still visible, but the 36 new images not.
The trial version of PhotoRescue Wizard already showed 32 of the 36 missing images, so I decided to go ahead and purchase.
The next hickup was that the intermediate Regsoft.com US based merchant provider declined my credit card saying this was because my bank/card provider had declined it. (This happened in the middle of Christmas). On Monday 27 I had long talks with my credit card provider that had all the requests from RegSoft.com on file (I had done 3 attempts), and each and every time my card provider had sent out an ACCEPTANCE of my card. Still RegSoft.com kept on sending me further e-mails saying my card provider had "DECLINED" my perfectly good card. So my only gripe here is that I hope Belgian "DataRescue" maker of the "PhotoRescue" app will "update" their merchant provider.
Pierre Vandevenne of DataRescue came to the rescue and dealt with the entire credit card issue from Belgium; I got my software key, and then I was up and running.
To make a long story short, 31.5 out of 36 images were rescued. The .5 refers to an image where 50% was gone, while the other half was rescued.
I consider this application, as well as the personal support by Pierrre a true miracle, and I truly recommend the application.
If there only was a way of purchasing through a better merchant provider!!!
May I suggest KAGI?

Testing the functionality of this app is rather easy. It will quickly and easily recover "deleted" photos which have been erased in your camera.
It is intended for use with FAT32, the standard MS-DOS format, and the standard format used by virtally all digital cameras and flash cards. Do not erase/format a flash card while mounted in OSX. You lose the FAT32 format and a variety of problems can occur. This is well documented in several discussions on the home page of MacFixIt if you care to research this topic.
Back to Photorescue: It works. Vendor clearly states that it is supported for one year of upgrades. IMHO it's worth it and I gladly paid the update fee for this new version.

Don't know what happened to earlier reviews. Think everyone has rated this 5 stars in past. It's saved me on two occasions, recovering almost 100 files from a damaged 512MB flash card (subsequently replaced by mfg.) and a smaller but important group of photos. This utility frequently recovers photos from "formatted" (by Nikon) flash cards until they're overwritten. That's how I tested the software when first purchased and was amazed at its ease of use. GUI is nothing fancy. Highly recommended to serious photographers. Cheapest insurance I've ever bought. Not a pro? What about the "value" of those snaps you took on a foreign vacation? Thanks for update. :)
