When a hard drive failed, data rescue folks wanted thousands of dollars to retrieve the photos. Instead, I 'bought' Photorescue Wizard after the trial version showed photos from several months ago were still on >formatted< Compact Flash cards. Several gigs of photos were retrieved.

Using Photorescue on a G4 iMac with OS X 10.3.9, the app 'quit unexpectedly' at the end of retrieving photos from each card. Maybe that is the best method to clear the RAM of whatever junk was left from working with the card.

Photos will need to be renamed once the photos are retrieved if the default numbering system is not ok. And even though Photorescue 'knows' the date of the original photo (if the camera's date was set correctly), the date used was the current session date. It could easily make that the date when the photos are rescued. EXIF info was preserved.

On the 'ordering' side- if the company you have to send payment to has an 'office' in your state, you will be charged sales tax, even when the software company is overseas.
