Grokker ReviewCrapola! - Version: 2.1.2, 5/8/2005 05:07PM PST

That is in one word all I have to say for this fine piece of "choc-colored chunk". It has SUCH potential that it should be a crime to hire the developers working on it now. After I submitted my bug report I had to guide them by the hand to finally see it. Only to see that they didn't forget to ask for money from me after the trial but never fixed the issue I reported. Stay away from them!

Grokker ReviewWorth Checking Out - Version: 2.4, 5/7/2005 11:53PM PST

Dr. Faustroll
Grokker seems to be beset by some of the most malicious and uninformed reviews I have seen on Versiontracker.
  • Yes, this is a Java app.
  • No, it has not been fully "Cocoaized", so that look and feel (including the install process) are not particularly Mac-like.
  • However, the interface is perfectly clean, clear and functional.
I have been using this product since the very first Mac beta version, and have yet to run into any major difficulties with it, or any problems with customer support - wish I could say that of all my apps...
Most importantly, what this application does - organize search results into categorized graphs - is unbelievably useful if your work depends upon heavy search engine use. My recommendation: pay no attention to the naysayers and give Grokker a shot - you might find you like it.

Grokker ReviewStill don't know how to write Mac software - Version: 2.4, 5/7/2005 02:57PM PST

These people still don't know how to write Mac software. First of all, they now call this "myGrokker", with a new icon so you can't recognize it from the last version. When you go to install it, you don't get to upgrade your old install, even if you install the new version to the same directory. When you do install, you get a Grokker icon (what happened to the name "myGrokker" now?) and a bunch of junk dumped in the same directory that you installed to. Hey, guys, you know that "Grokker.app" thing? It's actually a directory. Dump your junk UNDER it, like every other Mac app. Mind you, the support girl insisted on calling the menu bar a "toolbar" and couldn't figure out why I couldn't see an option on the toolbar... so you can see how much they know about Macs. Still disappointed. Could be a good app.

Grokker ReviewPoor installation, information overload - Version: 2.2, 1/7/2005 01:41PM PST

The installation tried to get me to install it somewhere I didn't want it. Then when I tried to install it to "applications" (imagine that), the installer wouldn't let me select that location. So I had to install it to some other place. I don't like making a mess on my hard drive.

Once installed, after I had to register, check my email, geez, I was not impressed and I feel like I've just wasted 30 minutes installing, registering, and giving it a try. The software is quite simply "information overload." I understand what its trying to do, and perhaps for certain people it works, but not for me.

I'd say give it a try and see if it works for you, but since the install is so poor, and you have to spend time registering just to try it, then I'd recommend skipping it completely.

Lastly, THERE IS NO UNINSTALL. Sure I trashed the main file, but if it comes with a package to install, what did it put on my HD, where, and shouldn't there be an uninstall to completely erase it all?

I guess this is the kind of junk you get when you take a Wintel app and port it.

Grokker CommentaryVery Curious - Version: 2.1.2, 7/16/2004 01:01AM PST

Just downloaded installer and worked without a hitch. Just spending a few minutes with this app. has been a pleasent suprise. It's a little rough around the edges, some display issues when hovering over different parts of the grok. But it seems a nice way to get at alot of information fast. Could see it's value right away. Will definately consider a purchase. I'll have to play with it more.

Grokker CommentaryThe iCon looked cool... - Version: 2.1.2, 7/6/2004 07:36PM PST

But it won't run on my G4 10.2.8 or my G3 iBook 10.3.4. Do people test stuff before release ? I see a lot of people having the same trouble. It just bounces in the dock then quits. My iBooks running a lot slower since trying this. Possible trogan in there somewhere ? But of course, macs don't get trogans do we....

1/2 a star for the iCon

I've had the same experience cited in other comment. Installer crashes. I've tried various selections of location and whether or not to use an alias. I'm interested to see if they can get this working in a timely manner.

I would very much like to try it out, but during installing it just quits, right after choosing the destinationfolder.

Too bad....

this thing just quits on open on my G5 1.8 with 10.3.4. This beta's not ready for my setup, I guess. . .
Intriguing concept, though. I wish DevonThink would visually map my files . . .

Grokker CommentaryAnd finally: v2.1 for Mac! - Version: PR1, 6/20/2004 03:29AM PST

It's still in beta, but since Groxis doesn't seem to bother to break the news here... You find a trial version at http://www.groxis.com/service/grok/g_prod_grokker_mac.html?id=8LTIPbxo.
I liked the interface of the pre-release better, but the functionality is finally worth having paid for - at least for me.
