Product Description:

SpamSlam is 100% effective spam-eliminating tool because it does not use a filter-based system. Instead, SpamSlam downloads all of your mail itself, and then uses a whitelist combined with a challenge/response system. If the sender isn't on your whitelist, their message is placed into a 'folder' of pending messages. The sender is then sent a confirmation request (or challenge) simply to prove that the sender is human. If the sender replies to the confirmation, he is moved to the whitelist, and all pending messages are released. If the sender fails to reply to the confirmation within a specified time frame, then the sender is blacklisted and all pending messages are moved to a blocked messages 'folder'. All pending messages and blocked messages are viewable from within SpamSlam. The challenge/response process is a one-time procedure. Once a person has completed the challenge/response system, they will be able to email you freely.

At the same time, SpamSlam is running its own local mail server. You then configure your email client to check this local server, and then only whitelisted, non-spam messages are received.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed a few more bugs, some serious, some minor.
  • Modified and improved the Preferences Window.
  • Added option to specify a different subject for Challenge Messages.
  • Updated the SpamSlam Manual.
  • Now properly handles messages between two different email accounts, both of which are using SpamSlam. Previous versions would have started an infinite loop of challenge requests between the two addresses. This has been resolved.
  • Rule order can now be changed, so you can set the order in which messages are checked against the Rules.
  • SpamSlam Data folder has been moved to the Application Support folder (~/Library/Application Support/SpamSlam Data/). See the SpamSlam Manual for information on importing all of your account information and messages from a previous version of SpamSlam.
  • More field options for Rules criteria. Message Source, Sender, To, Content-Type, and Date have been added as fields.
  • Fixed a very obscure bug which sometimes caused SpamSlam to stop sending confirmation messages entirely. The bug, which is related to the line-endings of the challenge request emails, would cause SMTP servers to drop connections and fail to send messages. Now, SpamSlam will never fail to send a challenge message.
  • Fixed a couple of UI-related bugs. Reording rules is somewhat nicer now.

OK...they've finally pissed me off enought to make a stink in publc. The damn thing keeps crapping out on me and support is non existant. My recommendation: this listing should be removed from Version Tracker. Highly recommended to AVOID.

SpamSlam Reviewilesa support MIA. Is this product dead? - Version: 2.1.1, 11/9/2004 11:54AM PST

I've been using this product since Feburary '04. Support was marginal until recently when it appears to have become non-existent. Filtering etc works well enough for my tastes but numerous GUI rendering problems are making me consider alternatives. I frequently have to kill and restart to recover. I would not recommend purchasing until it's determined whether there's any future plans for support and bug fixing. Sorry Ilesa!

SpamSlam ReviewCannot Recommend - Version: 2.1.1, 9/30/2004 09:03AM PST

I was initially unable to control the challenge/respond fucntionality (I turned it off but it was still doing it).

Challenge/response (ie confirming a mail address to the spammers) drove up my spam mail from 20/pay to 1,000/week. One new account, only weeks old, was caught up in this and now receives up to 100 spams per week.

I simply do not use these accounts anymore. So, if you want to drive Spam in your direction, give your email address to SpamSlam's authors, turn on challenge/response and get ready for more viagra/farm-sex offers than you can shake your stick at.

Not for me and I cannot recommend it for you either.
