New York City Screensaver ReviewFreeware to Sharewaare - Version: 3.0, 3/1/2004 01:22PM PST

WhiteDog
It's common practice for software authors to offer early versions of their work as freeware in order to judge market potential and elicit feedback and suggestions. If they continue to work on and improve their products, they usually start charging a shareware fee, a reasonable step to help support their ongoing work. This has happened with several OS X screensaver collections. Indeed, some new screensavers are coming out as shareware, never having been available as freeware.

It's also as predictable as inane complaints about the weather that some people will gripe about finally having to pay for what they were getting for free. My response to that is - get over it.

In my opinion the photos that David Hanauer has been adding to his New York City screensaver are excellent. If you don't think so you have the option of using the original 25 images in the freeware version. If you like them well enough to use them, and want the expanded collections, then you should be willing to pay for them without whining about it.

Too bad... a really nice free screensaver becomes a crummy begging for money one. Luckily 3/4 of the stuff for Macs is still free. There is something great about people offering the world beauty without asking for their dollars. And something quite the opposite about something like this.
