Product Description:

SleepTight provides a simple way to lock your machine when it goes to sleep or lock from a keyboard hotkey. Surprisingly, OS X's built in screensaver does not start automatically when the machine goes to sleep. Since the screensaver is the only Apple-supplied method of locking your machine without logging out, this means that a machine which has been put to sleep may wake up unlocked if the screensaver did not start on its own before the sleep timeout. This is especially frustrating for PowerBook users, who typically put their machines to sleep by closing the lid. Since the lid closure doesn't start the screensaver, the PowerBook will awaken unlocked. Apple will be fixing this in the next version of MacOS X (10.3 Panther). Until then you can use SleepTight.

SleepTight offers several advantages over similar tools:
  • Screensaver is only started at sleep if its not already running (prevents the dueling screensaver flicker of death).
  • If possible, the screensaver is started before sleep, so that when the machine awakes the screensaver is already started (no flicker of visible desktop).
  • Screensaver preferences are automatically modified at sleep to enable the screensaver password prompt, even if it has been turned off in the Screen Effects system preferences.
  • Start the screensaver from a custom hotkey.

What's new in this version:

  • Corrected a crash in System Preferences
  • Updated FAQ with conflict information for third party screensaver modules on certain Macintosh models

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 only

I think 'Lock My Mac' (http://www.freemacware.com/lock-my-mac) is much simpler. Much more convenient.

I hope the next version allows you to preset a screenshot or screensaver, whereby one tap on the space bar allows you 60 seconds to type in the LogIn password or fade again – while recording a QuickTime movie of the person trying to LogIn . . .
Those little QuickTime movies to be automatically destroyed after 2x 24 hours, in accordance with the laws on privacy. So no harm done.

Now wouldn't THAT be interesting, eh?

Love it. It's free!:) So thank you.
"If possible, the screensaver is started before sleep, so that when the machine awakes the screensaver is already started (no flicker of visible desktop)."
That never (rarely?) seems to happen though - I often notice that glimpse of what I was doing before the screensaver kicks in when I open my powerbook's lid. Is there anyway to maximise the operation of this feature?

SleepTight ReviewNon-intrusive - Version: 1.0.1, 12/14/2003 06:38AM PST

This is one of those apps you (I) can't live without. My sister is envious of my eMac and is always trying to get on. I could start my screen saver and then push the power putton to make my computer go to sleep, but I usually forget to. With SleepTight, Shift+Command+S locks the screen saver and sleeps my computer. Its a PrefPane so it isn't intrusive like some others (secureSLEEP namley). Best part is...its FREE!
