Product Description:

GPS Connect is a freeware program for Mac OS X which supports waypoint upload and download from Garmin GPS receivers. The NMEA protocol is also supported and should work with any brand of GPS receiver (Magellan, Garmin, etc.), however, this protocol doesn't support waypoint upload or download. GPS Connect aims to fill the software void for people interested in backing up their waypoints, but who don't want to buy a full featured program like GPSy or MacGPS Pro.

GPS Connect aims to be compatible with the rest of the GPS world, so it uses the XML based GPX file standard which allows easy exchange (file, or copy/paste) with other GPS programs for Macintosh, Linux, Windows, etc. which support this format.

This is beta level software and has not been extensively tested. We need your help testing this program with GPS receivers! If your GPS receiver model and software version number doesn't appear on the list of tested receivers on our web page, please send us an email (chimoosoft@yahoo.com) and let us know what works and what doesn't work. This beta version may have broken some things which worked in earlier beta versions. If you have previously submitted reports that an earlier version of GPS Connect worked with your GPS, please submit them again for this version.

What's new in this version:

  • Implemented support for GPX: the GPS eXchange Format as found on http://www.topografix.com/gpx.asp. This is a standard file format which is compatible with many GPS programs (Macintosh, Linux, Windows, etc.). This is now the default file format* for GPS Connect and is used whenever you save a file (not export).
    * note, you can still open a file produced by GPS Connect version 0.1, however, you can no longer save in this format.
  • Added a custom document icon for the GPX format.

  • Added drag and drop support from the finder (you can now drag your GPX file onto the GPS Connect icon to open it.
  • Double clicking on a GPX file will now open it with GPS Connect.
  • Fixed a couple of instances where older GPS units might not report their waypoint icons correctly.
  • Added printing support (for waypoints).
  • Waypoint Window improvements
    • comment column added
    • icon name column added
    • changing an icon name changes the icon.
    • columns are now resizeable
    • find waypoints option added
    • you can now copy waypoints in GPX format and paste them into another window.
    • fixed sorting for numeric columns
    • drag and drop support lets you drag waypoints between open waypoint windows.

GPS Connect Reviewworks great! - Version: 0.2, 3/18/2004 04:14PM PST

Uploads/downloads without a hitch to my Garmin Forerunner 201 via a no-name USB-serial adapter cable (with a Prolific Technology PL-2303 USB-to-serial bridge controller in it).

GPS Connect would be even better if it could up/download track points and route points.

For the price, I have no complaints.

GPS Connect ReviewWorks with eTrex Vista - Version: 0.2, 7/29/2003 02:54AM PST

Very cool. A simple app that simply works just like it says with my Garmin eTrex Vista. I feel much better about backing up my waypoints and having a bit better control over editing them. Nice interface and it connected right up using the included Garmin eTrex cabling with a PDA serial adapter going into a Keyspan serial>USB adapter. I only wish there were more great GPS software for OS X. Good job!

Just curious Ocyrus, are you lost all the time that you need to use this "all the time"?

Before I'd take the time to download this and fiddle around with it, I too would like to "see the list below" of tested receivers, that isn't there!
