partial replacement: SoundSource - Version: 1.5.5, 9/12/2009 06:33AM PST

for a partial replacement for "Detour" (same developer: rogueamoeba.com) check out their freebie "SoundSource". doesn't let you specify everything by application, but gives you a quick way to switch sound input and outputs.

if you have an intel mac you can do more or less the same with Audio Hijack Pro
just hijack the program you don't want to make sound and press the mute button.

Would someone PLEEEAAAASE make a menu bar app to mute web browsers (all of them). Personally, I use firefox. Everyday I wish for a way to do this, but after moving to Intel and with the demise of Detour, I am going fracking nuts. I would pay for this functionality. If you are a developer reading this, please consider the value this has for people.
A fix - Version: 1.5.5, 2/5/2007 12:00AM PST

I use it with a iMac G5 and I've noticed when I use Logic Pro and change the sample rate to 96000 I need to make sure I change it back to 44000. If I don't detour will not work. I can do this in Logic before I close it or if I don't remember I can open audio midi setup in the utilities folder and change it there. Its a cool program and works on my system.
Doesn't run on Intel - Version: 1.5.5, 9/10/2006 03:16PM PST

Since this is not Intel-compatible, and the developer has apparently abandoned it, some enterprising developer out there ought to make a new product to take over this niche. Either that, or these guys ought to open-source Detour. Or Apple ought to fix their model of how sound volume and routing is handled, to make products such as this unnecessary (perhaps the best option). Anyone? Anyone?

No routing observed at all under this system version.
However, this is a useful program.... when it works =)

no routing at all under 10.4.3, and it made some Dashboard widget crash repeatedly.

I tried out the program and loved the results. Only glitch was that once the detour icon was added to the menubar, nothing would remove it. I attempted to uncheck the menubar checkbox, and even just command click and drag. Ended up removing it from the system preferences.

I use Detour to route the sound from iTunes and VLC to a USB audio box while everything else is sent to the built-in speakers. The USB audio box is hooked up to my stereo. Detour has worked beautifully for this. I consider Detour to be one of my most satisfying software purchases ever. It was more than worth the asking price. For the moment, at least, Detour still works great. I too hope Rogue will release Detour as an open source project. I can imagine that there may be some issues with doing this, but hopefully those can be overcome and the source released. Detour deserves to live on.
