Product Description:
AeroFacsDisplay is the aeronautical facilities display for Mac OS X. It brings much of the Airport/Facility Directory to your Mac's desktop. The standard data files used by AeroFacsDisplay not only provide information on all of the airports included in the standard A/FD, but also every landing facility listed in the FAA's airport database - airports, heliports, and gliderports. They are all available to you using AeroFacsDisplay. Also included is an extensive navaid database that covers the United States and bordering Canadian areas, Central America, and the Caribbean.
What's new in this version:
Version 2.1 adds an AWOS/ASOS information tab (requires data files purchased on or after 9/30/04).

Sadly, this application appears to not work at all, at least not in any way that's apparent to me. I navigated to the sample data file in the preferences, the application warned me that the data was expired (effective 6/10/04), but when I typed in an identifier or clicked on Search, I got the message "one or more required files are missing." The only option provided other than visiting the preferences again is "Purchase..." Forgive me if I'm not interested in opening my checkbook before finding out if any use whatsoever can be made of this application. Two stars for a potentially good idea.

The idea is not unique and there is not much worth paying for here. All of this data can be obtained online from many web sites. As can be seen in the screenshot the fuel for this landing facility is 100LLA. That means they have 100LL and Jet A fuel. You can see this is nothing more than a data dump from the FAAs database. I'm not saying this isn't useful information. I'm just saying that the author should have at least parsed the data out to make it readable to the average user if he plans on asking for money. What about an expanded search capability. People don't necessarily know the name of an airport near Disneyland, for example. How about some advanced search capabilities. When this is added along with runway diagrams, now we're talking a useful program. Check out http://www.sats-net.com for search capabilities and photographs.
Disclosure: I spent 8 years creating the Airport Guide CD-ROM and commercially sold it for almost 4 years. I converted it into a website when everyone started giving the information away for free and later sold the web site and databases for use as the core database for the NASA-funded Small Aircraft Transportation System (SATS).

I am Larry Fransson, author of AFDX. My apologies to all of you who had difficulty getting AFDX to run right out of the box. I omitted a couple of index files in the original distribution, which is why the data files needed to be manually located and indexed. There is an updated installer that contains all of the necessary files available now at http://www.subcritical.com/downloads/AFDX_1.0.dmg. Or if you prefer, you can manually index the files by choosing "Load Data File..." from the File menu, and navigate to /Library/Application Support/AFDX where you should find two files - APT.txt and NAV.txt. Load each one of those, and you should be ready to go.
