Product Description:

Photo Buddy is a small Universal Mac OS X application that allows you to use more than one photo Library with Apple's iPhoto as well as with it's companion programs, iMovie and iDVD, iWeb, etc. The advantages of splitting your One Huge Photo Library into multiple, smaller ones include improved iPhoto performance, increased flexibility in organizing your digital photo collection, and a consistency with most other Mac applications that allow their respective data to be stored in as many files (documents) as you like.

iPhoto Buddy uses a simple, streamlined interface that was inspired by iPhoto itself. Anyone that has used iPhoto will immediately feel right at home using iPhoto Buddy. It truly is a companion application--a real buddy!

What's new in this version:

  • Introducing iPhoto Buddy Menu - a persistent Status Menu in your Mac's Menu Bar that provides instant access to each of your Libraries - even when iPhoto Buddy is not running. Requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later.
  • Create new Libraries in one simple step - no more creating empty folders in the Finder first.
  • A new Preferences option allows the user to specify which Library (if any) Buddy should register when it quits, so that subsequently launching iPhoto (or the other iApps) always opens the same Library. The selected Library is indicated in the Library List with a blue dot.
  • Corrected an issue where Buddy would launch iWeb in stead of iMovie from the contextual menu or the Dock Menu.
  • Corrected an issue where Buddy could quit iDVD without giving the user an opportunity to save changes to their projects first.
  • The Preference item to prevent iPhoto from overwriting the user's choice of registered Library with the other iApps was removed, as it was ineffective.
  • Performance and stability improvements.

iPhoto Buddy ReviewUnbelievably Great App! - Version: 1.3.3, 10/24/2009 09:06AM PST

I've been using iPhoto Buddy since about Version 1.1 (at least 5 years). As an educator, web-rookie; designer; animator; (among the many hats I wear using digital photos), I use (or support others using) several versions of Mac OS X and of iPhoto/iLife. I encourage all my clients and students to use iPhoto Buddy.
I am still in awe, with every iP update that Apple hasn't taken up this idea. Those of you who prefer to quit iPhoto, reopen holding the option key, and then browse for your other libraries each time you want to change -- more power to you, but I much prefer to have my list of libraries in one place from which I can relaunch the iPhoto library I need in one step. I have several different categories of photos -- Family shots; Professional photography; school yearbook client website photos; stop-motion animation libraries; to name a few.
Moreover, without having to open each library, I iPhoto Buddy shows me exactly which albums, books, slideshows; how many "items" (pix & movies); which iPhoto version; etc., etc.
Don't know how I'd function without iPhoto Buddy!
Thank you for keeping it freeware. I encourage all to donate.

iPhoto Buddy ReviewiPhoto Buddy Absolutely Positively Crucial Application - Version: 1.3.3, 8/23/2009 12:43PM PST

Why Apple does not contact these folks and cut a deal to buy their app and integrate it with iPhoto mystifies me.

You can slice and dice your monster iPhoto archive and back it up much better by this gem of an application. I positively recommend this as AN ESSENTIAL APP for your Mac.

And damnit, donate to this guy.

This free application worked so well for dividing up an overcrowded iPhoto Library that I donated.
It's much easier than switching libraries via the built-in Mac way. The interface is well thought out and attractive, and the users manual is extensive. It's great!
