One serious drawback in a very fine software

- Version: 6.0.3, 11/1/2008 03:00AM PST
osos10
I finally upgraded from v5.2 to v6.0.3. Indeed the new version is a major improvement. Particularly in the user interface, a vastly improved input/output formats, graphics and more (this is important when accounting for the fact that the set of improvements during the shift from v4.X to 5.X was essentially an empty set). Thus I find Mathematica 6.0.3 working smoothly. The only drawback is that under OS10.5.5, whenever Mathematica is running, my MacBook doesn't sleep and hence my battery is being drained. I hope that this will be fixed soon (before I have to purchase a new one).

Mathematica 6.0 (Mac version) loaded with bugs

At first I was sure something must be wrong with my Mac, but exactly the same bugs made their appearance on my very old G4 (PPC, 400MHz), G4 (PPC, 933MHz), and on my new PowerBook Pro (Intel, 2.33 GHz). First, it takes an infinite amount of time to open Mathematica files with v.6. Sometime the application opens up, but the .nb files would not. The .m files are not recognized by v.6. You can instruct your Mac to open a certain .m file with v.6, but a bug does not allow you to make all .m files carry the v.6 icon. Occasionally, the formating does not respond; I keep fighting forever with text colors options, and especially with the styles which change on a voluntary basis. The Find utility crumbles; Often, attempting to type the 'Replace with' object results in typing on the notebook itself. Not even funny.
2. They put so much effort in re-inventing Mathematica, but at least the Mac version (I am not familiar with the Windows or Linux performance) cries back to v.5.2. This is quite unfortunate as v.6 seems to be loaded with goodies which, at least at the present stage, I cannot enjoy. To summarize, Mac users like me are eagerly waiting to v.6.1...
3. What is most frustrating is the fact that I cannot find anywhere on the Wolfram web site a list of v.6 drawbacks, bugs, problems... Nothing! Mathematica 6.0 is just perfect...
4. BTW, above and beyond my criticism, I honestly believe Wolfram should get the Field Medal (the Nobel analogue for Mathematicians) for inventing the Mathematica software.
