AlbertX Review..OK, it works! - Version: 2.2.1, 5/28/2004 06:35AM PST

fungiblemac
Having gone away for quite a while, I've now returned to this. The (new) author suggested I trash its preferences after my problems, so I did. However the Setup Assistant doesn't work - suggest you ignore this, and just go straight through to set it up via the Prefs.

It does work, and will compile an Applescript. However:
-can't check your own pop server at localhost; it has to be an external server
-I use an email proxy on my machine (PostArmor), which gives its pop output on port 8110. But there's no way to set a different port to check. (This would be a problem if you're using secure POP, which doesn't use port 110.)
-doesn't work, in my experience, if you only give it a numeric IP address as the pop server.
-the readme should point out that the subject or first line of the email has to *exactly* match the "authentication code". Though one finds this out by trial and error.

But it does do the things that it says, once you've worked within those parameters. So I suppose four stars are in order. The fifth would be reserved for those feature.bug things above.

AlbertX Review*Completely* doesn't work... - Version: 2.2.1, 11/27/2003 06:55AM PST

Continued from below: OK, *sometimes* it allows me to enter data in fields. But no matter which email address I tell it to check, it doesn't seem to see them, or check them correctly. I keep getting "POP socket error (103)" and "POP socket error (2): ERR Invalid command; valid commands: PASS, QUIT".

I would like this to work because I can think of things I would do with it. Why not program it in Cocoa, instead of this RB junk?

AlbertX ReviewNeeds an update for Panther - Version: 2.2.1, 11/27/2003 05:35AM PST

I'm trying to get this installed on Panther and it won't. FIelds that are compulsory won't accept input. Very annoying, actually, since I want to try it out.

Not too sure about the ethics of the formerly free code becoming paid-for, either. Pity about Stimpsoft. Theirs worked, I think.
