MidiMaster CommentaryMidi Master and Melody Assistant - Version: 1.00, 6/14/2003 02:48AM PST

Having recently invested in a Yamaha Disklavier DC3 PRO which records on its built-in MIDI synthesizer both in 'enhanced' and 'XP' mode - the latter down to incremental touch/release details of keys and pedals - I have been looking for a program that would convert these MIDI files into AIFF and then MP3 for a new website.

While Melody Assistant does provide a better sound via its built-in synthesizer, it does not retain but rather strips (at least) important pedal information from these MIDI files. Therefore quick 'half pedals' are translated into plucking sounds in the bass while the melody is kept legato in the treble or right hand, even though the half pedals were meant for the whole thing as any self-respecting pianist would be quick to point out. Consequently the playback (and score) in Melody Assistant make it seem as if I were trying to play a piano transcription of some tune by imitating guitar chords in the left hand, even though that's decidedly NOT my intention nor is it anywhere near the 'character' of the various pieces that I had recorded!

Conversely, Midi Master retains all such information faithfully, and I am greatly relieved to have found such a program which certainly seems far more 'professional' to me if only on this particular account.

One question for the developer, however: why is it that at the end of a piece, the Midi Player keeps going (silently) instead of stopping? This is the one thing that's keeping me back from registering / purchasing the full copy, and I would appreciate hearing from crimsoncompilers on this matter at their earliest convenience.

The 'Master' in the title refers to the program's ability to 'Master' the output sound to disk. This would be clear to anyone who had read the Readme file.
