On a 2 Ghz G5 you get better than real-time (approx 1.5x real-time with default settings) while using only approx 60% of 1 CPU. I strongly suspect that the work is being slowed down by the speed of the DVD drive. I have however not done any test with a DVD image located on a hard drive.

poncho22: Yeah, perhaps you're new to DVD ripping, but it's extremely processor-intensive and even a dual 2GHz G5 will ONLY get you *almost* realtime encoding, typically. Also, don't bother with Quicktime when playing divx avi's- use Videolan Client (VLC).
I've been using HandBrake for my ripping lately but have been seeking more control (otherwise that app is outstanding) so I will try this app.

Just tried DVDibbler and it worked! However, Terminal ran for over five hours converting one DVD movie to an AVI file. Is that normal?
Running OS 10.2.8 on a G4 desktop.
*The final avi would not play in OS X but played fine in Classic (OS 9.2) Any clues on that?
Otherwise, I'm really impressed by the final output.
Thanks,
Poncho

I have tried 3 or 4 GUIs for MEncoder, and I think this one is the best. One thing that seems to be specific to DVDibbler, is that all the movies I convert end up being stretched vertically, even if I crop and scale it to the correct aspect ratio (I use Rula to measure the video from the DVD). One thing I would love to see added to this, is a calculator that can estimate the best bitrates to use, based on the length of the movie. I realize the length would have to be manually entered, most likely. Right now I am always having to use a calculator to make the movie the best quality, while fitting on a CD.
Extremely Simple

Interface is clean and has LOTS of options to mess around with. But if you want to rip your DVDs to .avi with one click, then this is the app for you. I have been ripping like crazy, I love it!
AWESOME!

This app is great! True one-click DVD ripping! It did a great job on my G4 PowerBook - compressed one standard-length movie to a 555 MB DivX AVI and another to 615 MB. Great for ripping your DVDs to AVI files for easier portability and better battery life while traveling. Just make sure you follow the link to the developer's site and download the support applications pack; this app won't work without it. Also, it would be a good idea to install the DivX files (from divx.com).
So what exactly does DVDibbler DO? It's the front end for an app that already has a front end? I'm utterly confused on this, especially since I've since found countless other "front ends" for Mencoder. Could someone please clear this up for me? I'd much appreciate an explanation. Thanks in advance.
