OnDeck ReviewClose to excellent - Version: 1.9.4, 3/23/2006 01:31PM PST

Very close to what I need to publish currently-playing track info and album cover artwork. Far superior to Kung Tunes, which required major kludging to ge the artwork up.

Has some flakiness and confusion in its prefs but once set up seems to be pretty stable so far, although during testing I was doing a lot of track hopping and it seemed to not update its artwork file.

The biggest missing feature is an "Idle" message of some sort for when iTunes is not playing.

Brandon Fuller's "Now Playing" plug-in

<http://brandon.fuller.name/archives/hacks/nowplaying/itunes/mac/#download>

looks like the "right" and most elegant way of doing this since it won't require a separate backgroun app, but so far I haven't been able to get it to save files locally for use with my locally-hosted site.

OnDeck Troubleshooting ReportWhen will it work correctly? - Version: 1.9.4, 3/10/2006 11:35AM PST

It's the 3rd version of this app that I'm trying (1.7.1, 1.8.3, 1.9.4).
It's still far from perfection.

You don't have the ability to change text color or background window color. It would be much appreciated cause the informations are almost unreadable, even with transparency set to 0, it's still transparent.
Some variable are still not working: you can't display the year or the length of the song in the main window. Maybe some other variables are not working but I didn't try it all.

A new feature could be cool: the window fade in and out when a new song is beginning. But maybe it's not the purpose of this app.

The FTP doesn't work.
The windows don't go away period.
No feature can be just disabled
and This has no form of feedback for doing anything.

OnDeck CommentaryI Like it - Version: 1.9.1, 10/25/2005 10:00AM PST

Only early days but it's looking good. It hung up a couple of times at first but since then no major problems. A little erratic if you try and move it round the desktop and it could be quicker loading up artwork - can take up to half a minute but these don't really bother me. Displays all the right song info. Nice.

OnDeck Troubleshooting ReportNot so great with Tiger - Version: 1.8b3, 7/21/2005 03:37PM PST

This is a great concept program, but I have experienced lots of problems with OnDeck on two different Macs running Tiger 10.4.2.

1) OnDeck uploads artwork okay through FTP (for a while, anyway), but not the track information (even when given the FTP info the image upload).

2) I experience Lots of Applescript errors after it runs for a while, then it abruptly stops uploading artwork for no apparent reason.

3) Neither the Publish Assistant nor the Setup Assistant work/run.

As far as I can tell, there isn't a way to publish a "recently played" list either.

It's a real shame Windoze users have such a great program to use (Now Playing - http://brandon.fuller.name/archives/hacks/nowplaying) and the Mac landscape is littered with half-working works in progress.

Sigh...

OnDeck ReviewJust what I was looking for - Version: 1.7.1, 5/5/2004 01:23AM PST

I have been looking for an app like this for a long time. MANY THANX to the developer! The only thing I can think of to make this even better is to allow the vertical hight to be adjusted, and the horizontal size to flex w/ the size of the image. Many of my album art pieces are wider than the traditional album cover, and when displayed in OnDeck, they get shrunk down too much. If I keep the window to their size, the regular albums look funny w/ all that extra space. However, that is just me and I can be very picky.

Even though the initial versions were a bit flaky, this is turning out real good! I just replaced Clutter with this nice little unobtrusive app.

Very nice!

I draw a parrallel between this "product" and the ways things are done in the world these days. Why release software that isn't ready, that is incomplete and going to draw criticism even before it can be downloaded and tested? Why bother? If all or most of the preferences don't work but will in an up-coming version, why release this version now? What's the point if it is not functional and no-one can guage the program's effectiveness? Totally irrational decision and the proof is in the comments preceding mine. Why set yourself up for failure, Man?
