At least for today, RebuildDesktopX is no longer listed on the SubRosaSoft site. Nor does the download link work.

My OS X 10.2.6 system had gotten corrupted -- documents created by the app I'm building were suddenly bound to an "application" that was actually a hidden system folder named "501". I could temporarily rebind an existing document to my application, but every new document was bound to the "501" folder. Of course, document icons were blank.
RebuildDesktopX has cured this problem, with the added benefit of making application launching MUCH faster than it was. I suspect this may be due to the system cache file being reduced from 2.4 MB to 188 KB. I'm also seeing newer icons on some of my favorite documents.

While I agree that the term "desktop rebuild" is misleading, I don't understand why there is so much anger about the implication that OS X may occasionally need some maintenance. Yes, *NIX has been around for a long time, but the AQUA GUI hasn't, and the blend of MacOS functions and *NIX has not. For the record, I think OS X is the best OS out there, and I find it a joy to use. But after recently restoring files during some trouble with file corruption on my drive (faulty drive) I've had wierd problems with the default application being permanently set wrong on various document types, and assorted other strange behavior, apps not opening, strange system lag, etc, which fsck and Disk Utility did nothing to fix. This app fixed the problems in about 3 seconds, AND sped up my machine's boot process. I have no doubt that my problems were caused by some corruption to the files this app removed, as my machine is back in proper OS X shape.
Thank you for developing this app, and for posting a list of the shell commands it runs. I had no idea those files controlled so much of my GUI. So, 5 stars for doing what it says it does. Seems bloated for an app that just runs a few shell commands, but I can't argue with success.

Since running this program there are a number of programs that will no longer show on the menu bar. These include date and time, iChat, and ASM.

A tiny shell script or slightly larger than tiny AppleScript could to the same work as this huge RealBasic monster.

note on dropstuff, I accidentally used an old copy, Stuffit does not normall do that, but sometimes in .app files it fails to carry the executable bit on the executable file. Its generally great software, thanks to Aladdin for giving me a new copy to use.

Immediately quits when trying to launch, without any message. 600-something K download (1.9MB unstuffed) seems excessively large for an app that runs 4 or 5 shell commands.
