Product Description:

AppleJack is a tool to make it easy to troubleshoot your Mac when no other startup disk is available to you. The script gives you an interactive menu-driven environment for basic disk check/repair, permissions repair, .plist validation, cache cleanup, and swap file removal. You can do basic system maintenance even if your GUI won't start up at all, simply by booting into single user mode, and typing 'applejack'.

New version of AppleJack fixes a serious bug that could affect File Vault users. AppleJack 1.3.2 also performs all file deletions much more securely. The new version leaves the LaunchServices preferences db and cached User Pictures alone by default. You can remove them by using AppleJack in AUTO mode rather than auto mode. (For a complete list of improvements see What's New, below.)

What's new in this version:

  1. Fixed a SERIOUS problem in the cache cleaning routine whereby an entire hard drive could be obliterated if the user's home directory was either typed in incorrectly or if it was a file vault rather than an actual directory system.
  2. Improved the safety of the swap file removal routine
  3. Cache cleanup now leaves cached user pictures untouched, except of course when running AppleJack in deep cleaning mode.
  4. Added a check routine for the /tmp and /private/tmp directories, since a missing temp directory is often implicated in boot failure. AppleJack 1.3.2 will create these directories and symlinks as needed when the drive mounts for write access.
  5. Gave up on putting the man page in the correct location (/usr/local/man or /usr/local/share/man) and put it where it will be found on all OS configurations (/usr/share/man). man applejack should work on all systems now.
  6. Removed the option to search a user's home directory for cache files outside of the ~/Library/Caches directory since this is out of scope for this application and just added to the bloat and complexity. It could also lead to some dangerous file deletions for the unwary user.
  7. Cache cleanup now removes the prebindOnDemandBadFiles list.
  8. The script now changes location at startup to /private/var/tmp, in order to minimize the potential for damage from any lingering bugs in the code.

AJ Users (all thousands of you),
Having used this application for years I can recall numerous times that this untility has save me countless hours of work. I just visited the developers site to find out he is in the same pinch as he was with the move to OS10.5. He is strapped for money to develop the update to Snow Leopard <http://sourceforge.net/projects/applejack/forums/forum/271611/topic/3386280?message=7708116>.
Listed as FREEWARE he will accept donations. Please consider a donation to help him. It won't take much to fund a solution. EX: an external hard drive and Snow Leopard. The link is: <http://sourceforge.net/project/project_donations.php?group_id=79562>.

...for LEOPARD;
Some claim that if you reinstall 1.5 from scratch it will work
Odd. The developer wasnt going to have a retail copy of SL until at least Sept 2....
youd think a SF developer would have had it a month early
Also inferred that since SL had changed little in terms of code-he could take off 15 mins and dash out a few lines of code and we would have AJ for SL-this on Aug 30...
Since it is free, I can hardly complain-but other suspect utilities such as XUPPORT, APE and SILK which I paid for are notable by their absence near a month after retail release-since im sure they had access to the developer final or GM well before that
