Excellent App

Absolutely troublefree installation of Squid on your computer or server. I installed this on 2 servers; one of which is now linked to the other, since it connects over a wireless connection accross a street. Easy to install and easy to modify.
This app has saved me hours of download time when doing the updates on about 30 Macs in our school.
Highly recommended!

Squid Guard - Version: 1.8, 5/16/2006 08:48PM PST

First, does this work with Server? Also, I would very much like to see automatically updating Squid Guard also packaged with this. That would really make this spectacular. It would also be nice to make it configurable through this interface, but integration first would be a wonderful start.
Stunningly good - Version: 1.61, 6/1/2005 07:33AM PST

This deployment of squid is stunningly useful, particularly behind a corporate type of firewall with passwords. It allows a one stop password entry, even across applications that do not necessarily use the Apple network settings (such as firefox). Add in password expiration on corporate proxies and after a time you see the incredible usefulness of internal proxy cache. Add the auto shutdown feature when you log off and you see that the author carefully considered what features were most important to implement without making the application overly complicated.

I use squdidman behind a Uni firewall. I have a squid network settings location, this allows software update and a number of proxy unfriendly system tasks to work.
I have had no problem setting squidman up or using it. Used 1.1 and now use 1.52.

still downlowding images twice - Version: 1.52, 12/21/2003 09:54AM PST

Dear Tony.
i think safari needs a cache utility that stops it from downloading images twice.
i open an image then if select "download image to disk" Safari still fetches the image all over again from the remote server. instead of recalling it from cache.
i thought squid takes care of that. am i mistaken or is there something wrong on my end.

Works! A little better than past versions. On initial loads it (and this may be squid in general) is at least as fast as native browsing and cached items are much faster. Thanks!
I'd like to see dansguardian and the http_accel features added if possible.

Tony Gray:
You're right. The program I was thinking of is Squid Manager, not SquidMan. This program is the superior of the two.
I sorted out my issue by deleting the .plist file for SquidMan and starting it again. It works fine now. It compliments Privoxy nicely. Between the two, I have a fast and private surfing experience.

Needs some improvement...

I just installed SquidMan, and after initializing Squid, it stopped responding whenever I tried to open up SquidMan again.
I did notice the new features that were added, greater control of Squid is always good, but unless SquidMan operates properly, it's not very useful to me.

Hi Kemo. This is the first ever public release of SquidMan, but you mention "the new features that were added" - could SquidMan be conflicting with another similar program or existing squid installation you have already installed? If you mail me at the address in the ReadMe with more details about the problem and your system, I'll see what I can do to help. SquidMan has been over 12 months in development and is used by a number of my friends, but nobody has ever reported that SquidMan has stopped responding before.
I installed squidman and in a couple of clicks squid was configured to run automatically at boot with the preferences I needed. I have a lot of machines on my home network and having squid saves a lot of bandwidth, and speeds up system updates and other large downloads. I later added webmin, and vine server and it's a near perfect headless all-around server.
