Product Description:

As the Internet expands, having a distinct style for your site becomes increasingly important. CSSEdit is a cascading style sheet editor that actually makes designing your site a joy.

Powerful previewing capabilities allow you to see your site evolve without having to open a browser. Intuitive visual editors allow you to change all styling attributes easily. A powerful source environment with intelligent auto-complete will seduce anyone who codes his CSS by hand.

The superior organizing capabilities in CSSEdit will make managing your style sheets much easier. Use groups, filter styles and much, much more...

There is a lot more, but the best way to find out how good this is, is to try it out!

What's new in this version:

  • Any site can be styled and previewed: blogs, dynamic Web Apps, Content Management Systems, anything — regardless of the backend technology (PHP, Ruby on Rails,…). Local HTML files of course work great as always
  • Override functionality lets you edit online style sheets and preview changes in real time, without reloading or attacking your server
  • X-ray shows margins, padding and positioning for selected elements
  • Style Sheets button shows all used style sheets and lets you edit them
  • Previewed HTML files automatically refresh when the file is saved
  • Much friendlier Preview management list
  • Validation
  • Handy inspector window validates your CSS with the W3C
  • Click on problems to go to the exact spot in your source code
  • Milestones
  • Save a copy of your style sheet while you're writing it and never lose work while debugging
  • Revert to a previous Milestone easily, fully Undo aware
  • Annotate saved Milestones to keep track of your progress
  • Browser Integration
  • Comes with a collection of bookmarklets (actions you can add to your browser's bookmarks bar) to tap into CSSEdit's functionality
  • Extract, preview and edit any site's style sheets with one click in your browser (works with everything: Safari, Firefox, Camino,…)
  • Extract From Site
  • More accurate and reliable extraction of style sheets
  • Improved and more focused interface
  • Source Editing
  • Source and Visual editors can now be open at the same time!
  • Un/Comment to quickly disable/enable parts of your code
  • CodeSense completion can now be explicitly requested by pressing escape or option-escape
  • More powerful and customizable Re-Indent options
  • Line numbers and marking of the current line (optional)
  • Several improvements to indentation and spacing preservation
  • Visual Editing
  • Editor groups can be collapsed/expanded independently, allowing you to open more than one at the same time
  • Units can now be selected by typing in their corresponding fields
  • More intuitive editors for a range of properties
  • Improved generation of shorthand property values
  • Rewritten Core
  • Speed! The new engine can handle huuuuuge style sheets

CSSEdit ReviewNice but Dead - Version: 2.6, 6/4/2009 10:43AM PST

I used to use this almost daily but it was one of those things I begrudged. It's like 90% there but the final few bugs that need fixing make it infuriating to use. For instance, after you save your work, you need to "override and edit" each CSS file in order to work in CSSEdit again. It's very much like closing and reopening CSSEdit after every save, which makes for an awkward workflow.

The developer hasn't released any updates since 2007 (shortly after my purchase) and doesn't respond to emails. I waited two months after emailing before posting this.

Frankly, I don't like the idea of someone who will take money then drop support for the product. S/he should start providing updates, make the code open source or give refunds.

Unfortunately, I have recommended CSSEdit in the past to people who bought it but I can't any longer and now suggest a text editor, like TextMate, which is what I use now.

This app is nice eye candy but unless you are gifted with finely honed intuition, there is no support guide for this product.

Nor do the developers respond to requests for support.

I've downloaded and re-installed twice. The help button does not function.

I own 178 applications and this is the first time a developer has completely ignored my requests for contact.

CSSEdit ReviewFlawless - Version: 2.6, 11/5/2007 02:54PM PST

A few comments back, I noted that, while still very happy with this app, the only thing it was missing was the fact that changes made in another application would not be reflected in CSSEdit. Now it does, and I'm very pleased!

Excellent!

Note--I've never seen any CPU related issues as mentioned below. Currently running along side Dreamweaver CS3 and TextMate on OS 10.5 Intel.
