Product Description:

Virtual ][ is an application that emulates the Apple ][ computer. Its main purpose is to enjoy, on your Macintosh computer, the nostalgic fun of the Apple ][. The main features are:
  • Emulates the Apple ][, Apple ][+ and Apple //e;
  • Many configurable options, like plugin cards, amount of memory and type of monitor;
  • Different configurations can be saved as documents;
  • Multiple virtual machines can run at the same time (only limited by available processor power);
  • Emulates several peripheral cards:
    • The 16 Kb RAM card;
    • An 80-column card;
    • The 80-column / 64K RAM card for the Apple //e;
    • A clock card;
    • A printer card;
    • The Disk ][; card;
    • The Apple mouse card;
    • A Z80 card.
  • Supports full screen mode;
  • The Macintosh mouse can be used to operate either the Apple ][ game paddles or the Apple ][ mouse;
  • Can read and write Apple ][ disk images in several popular formats;
  • Emulates a cassette tape drive;
  • Plays sound produced by the Apple ][ through the Macintosh speakers;
  • Accurately implements the hardware of the Apple ][ in software, so all Apple ][ software should run;
  • Requires Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) or later.

What's new in this version:

  • Added emulation of the Epson FX-80 printer (available in OSX 10.3 "Panther" or better).
  • The state of a virtual machine can be saved so it can continue to run later on.
  • Included support for the RamWorks card on the Apple //e. This card gives you up to 8 MB of memory, and replaces the "64K / 80 column card", which is now obsolete and no longer supported.
  • The program now includes a number of different character sets ROM's and you can add your own character sets as well.
  • Simplified the installation procedure for ROM image files. Previously ROM files had to have specific names; now the program automatically searches for a ROM file suitable for the machine to be emulated.
  • The "phosphor" color of the monochrome screen can now be changed to any color; it used to be "green only".
  • The video refresh rate of the emulated monitor can now be configured.
  • When doing a cold restart of the emulated machine (ctrl-command-reset), the disks now stay in the disk drives.
  • Improved compatibility of the mouse emulation; software like Apple //e Desktop now runs fine.
  • Fixed a bug that made it impossible to remove a diskette image from a configuration.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher

Virtual ][ Troubleshooting ReportUpdate 5.4 -> 5.5 breaks license - Version: 5.5, 10/8/2006 12:09AM PST

I can't update to 5.5 because doing so breaks my license. The new version runs in demo mode. Restoring from backup repairs the damage, if any.

The Apple ][ was recently voted the greatest PC of all time by PCWorld. I think you can say without a doubt that Virtual ][ is the greatest Apple ][ emulator of all time.

I purchased this emulator ages ago and it just keeps getting better and better.

I've played around with Virtual II a few times, but don't have that many IIe titles to justify the cost of the software. But it defintely has the most features of any of the ones out there. I did have a question .... Ever planning to include IIgs emulation? I have a lot of old games from my IIgs days, and the small selection of IIgs emulators dont run very well (if at all).
