Product Description:

Terrabrowser is an internet browser for satellite photos and topographical maps which are obtained from the Microsoft Terra Server. The map data is provided by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and therefore only covers the United States at this time (although expansion to other map servers may occur in the future). Although a GPS receiver is not required to enjoy Terrabrowser, using one opens up more extensive features such as bookmark transfer, and tracklog/route display. Includes extensive bookmarking support, image cache, address search, region download, and many other features!

Terrabrowser features built in support* for Garmin GPS receivers, and also supports Magellan receivers when combined with the freeware program MacGPS Babel). Download waypoints from your GPS to display on the maps, edit them, upload new waypoints to your receiver.

Terrabrowser aims to be compatible with the rest of the GPS world, so it uses the XML based GPX file standard which allows easy exchange (file, copy/paste) with other GPS programs for Macintosh, Linux, Windows, etc. which support this format.

* note - some features are still under development for this alpha version.

What's new in this version:

  • The find button in the toolbar actually does something now - it opens the location search window.
  • Rewrote many of the instructions in this readme file since they were out of date.
  • Zipcode search now works with zipcodes which begin with a '0'.
  • Users are now prevented from entering out of bound values into the latitude and longitude fields in the toolbar.
  • Scale bar now adjusts itself to display extra zoom levels for the urban map but remove them for photo and topo maps. It also auto adjusts the value to be more zoomed out if necessary.
  • Added basic printing support for the map which prints whatever is currently visible including waypoints and tracklogs.
  • Added basic printing support for waypoint documents, however it is not very customizable at this point.
  • Track view of waypoint document now resizes correctly.
  • Added distance calculation feature - just option-click and drag to display a calculated distance on the map.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3

Additional Requirements:

  • Version 1.5 alpha: Mac OS X 10.3 or higher
  • GPS is not required
  • Broadband connection highly recommended

Terrabrowser CommentaryDangerous Characters - Version: 1.5b3, 4/15/2006 09:49PM PST

I've only used terrabrowser without connecting a GPS unit (but have found out how to make my Magellan Explorist 300 connectable elsewhere) and have been satisfied with the performance of this utilitarian application.

I have one caution for those out there naming their waypoints (and who doesn't?)

Do not use the ampersand (&) symbol, for some reason it renders your bookmarks unreadable and it'll appear as if you've lost them all on your next launch.

Furthermore it renders Terrabrowser unable to add further bookmarks to the file.

Terrabrowser ReviewGreat Program - Version: 1.5b3, 11/9/2005 03:04PM PST

I think duckhue is missing the point of this program!

I have been using it for years and not only does it work well. The developer is once of the nicest people I have had the pleasure of writing to for tech support.

I just got a GPS unit and I love the GPS integration that this program offers. In fact I do most of my route planning with this program. True I really don't need a GPS to places I have been hundreds of times but it makes a boring drive more interesting having the GPS along. The program is also good for scoping out an area before going there for a Geocache hunting trip.

A great program and a great developer gives this top marks in my book!

TerraBrowser is a very nice little program. I have been using it for some time and it has assisted me in tracking my hikes and bicycle rides on a satellite map.

I am very pleased with the program, and the author is responsive and helpful.
