Terrabrowser CommentaryDangerous Characters - Version: 1.5b3, 4/15/2006 09:49PM PST

I've only used terrabrowser without connecting a GPS unit (but have found out how to make my Magellan Explorist 300 connectable elsewhere) and have been satisfied with the performance of this utilitarian application.

I have one caution for those out there naming their waypoints (and who doesn't?)

Do not use the ampersand (&) symbol, for some reason it renders your bookmarks unreadable and it'll appear as if you've lost them all on your next launch.

Furthermore it renders Terrabrowser unable to add further bookmarks to the file.

Terrabrowser ReviewGreat Program - Version: 1.5b3, 11/9/2005 03:04PM PST

I think duckhue is missing the point of this program!

I have been using it for years and not only does it work well. The developer is once of the nicest people I have had the pleasure of writing to for tech support.

I just got a GPS unit and I love the GPS integration that this program offers. In fact I do most of my route planning with this program. True I really don't need a GPS to places I have been hundreds of times but it makes a boring drive more interesting having the GPS along. The program is also good for scoping out an area before going there for a Geocache hunting trip.

A great program and a great developer gives this top marks in my book!

TerraBrowser is a very nice little program. I have been using it for some time and it has assisted me in tracking my hikes and bicycle rides on a satellite map.

I am very pleased with the program, and the author is responsive and helpful.

If it looked and worked more like: THIS ...then I think we'd have something here.

Terrabrowser ReviewWorked well for me - Version: 1.5a9, 3/6/2005 10:39PM PST

Saw comments about difficulty getting desired results that suggested it worked best by entering only Zip Code. In my experience, having used the "Search for location" feature several times, it works very well with full address lookups (I looked up 3 local addresses and 2 in other metropolitan areas, and one that was totally rural... 2 of these weren't covered by the higher quality "urban" settings). Topo maps are great for locating the area of interest, photos are OK when the finer "Urban" coverage isn't available, but in a pinch the photos can be useful. Data are free, and if it costs $15 to get this flexible an interface then certainly for some of us this will be very much worth it.
PRinting/saving needs serious work, but I see much promist in this app!!

Terrabrowser Review2nd try - Version: 1.5a9, 1/31/2005 08:55PM PST

OK, I tried it again. It does work but only when you just type the zip code. The B/W photos are poor quality and not close enough. It's good for the price I quess. I won't be buying it anytime soon. There are really good close color ones you can get on the internet. They cost more, but it's worth it if you need it. I don't need it. It would be more like a toy for me.

This is a VERY good idea, but that's all it is, an idea. It doesn't work at all. I tried to find my location, but all you can look at are the few sites that are pre-programed in. Then it crashed, and the guy has nerve the to put a shareware timer on to ask for payment. I think you better get it working first before you think about money. The time you spent on that could have been going to something more productive. The way these shareware application come and go, it's best to wait and buy it WHEN it works. It's even worse when the application has to depend on external sources for it to work. A lot of us had that bad experience with Watson. They came in with a great application, took everyone's money, and then sold out. All we are left with is a unsupported application that fails to work more everyday. It's like a slow death. I think I'll wait on this application for it to get working and see if it's still around in a year or two. I respect the guys a lot who make shareware applications, but if you don't keep after them, the work gets sloppy and some even try to just throw crap on to make a quick buck.

Terrabrowser ReviewGetting better all the time, responsive developer - Version: 1.5a8, 12/24/2004 02:39AM PST

I had a minor issue when trying the 1.5 alpha in that my old registered serial number wouldn't work. Read me said to e-mail, so I did. Ryan not only responded with an updated serial number, but was also very receptive to my suggestions and let me know that an even newer version was just posted. The option-drag feature now shows useful (and very accurate) range figures. Upcoming GPS features are going to be great.

I've had a great time with this software and can say that for me it was well worth the reasonable price. I feel good about supporting developers like this.

This app just keeps getting better! Still can't get the latest version to "manage bookmarks" which makes it a little hard to use but otherwise, this is an awesome app.

I's a great little app.
