Product Description:

Natural-Media painting and illustration software. Corel Painter IX is a highly-sophisticated painting and illustration application designed to capture the intricate nuances of traditional art tools while taking advantage of the incredible power of digital media. It is the must-have software for creative professionals, whether they're in film making, game development, commercial design, illustration, photography, or fine arts.

What's new in this version:

  • Dual monitor support in Windows versions has been significantly improved. You no longer have to stretch the application window across both monitors. Palettes, toolbars and the toolbox can now be moved outside the application window. Dialog boxes will appear on the same monitor as the active canvas.
  • Airbrush has been significantly improved over Painter IX, resulting in much smoother appearance.
  • When using CMD-Opt / CTRL-ALT to resize brushes, you no longer have to click once before painting, allowing you to work faster and uninterrupted.
  • Zooming while using CMD+ / CMD- or CTRL+ / CTRL- now uses predetermined values. This makes it much easier to return to common zoom levels.
  • When repeatedly saving and opening PSD files, color degradation no longer occurs. If an ICC profile is embedded into a PSD file, it will not be applied if the embedded profile is the same as the Internal RGB profile.
  • Support for nested groups in the PSD file format has been improved. Nested layer groups will now appear as expected.
  • Iterative Save now works with documents containing names such such as "Untitled..." or "Clone of...", giving you greater flexibility when using this feature.
  • In some isolated instances, corruption appeared in RIFF files after saving. This has been fixed and no longer happens in Painter 9.1. Extra special thanks to those of you who sent in your files to help us pinpoint this issue!
  • Paper size, contrast and brightness information is maintained between Painter sessions. This will save you time from having to continuously change the paper settings.
  • With certain brushes, Digital Watercolor Wet Fringe produced white artifacts. This no longer occurs in Painter 9.1.
  • Digital Watercolor diffusion now applies to strokes within selections.
  • Targa (TGA) files now have support for one channel. More than one channel will be lost.
  • Fixed various instability issues with using selections.
  • New Art Pen Brushes for use with Wacom's 6D Art Pen have been added.
  • To greatly broaden the range of brushes that can take advantage of Wacom's new 6D Art Pen, the "Rotation" Expression has been added to the following Dab Types:
    Circular
    Captured Dab
    Artists' Oils
    Camel Hair
    Flat
    Liquid Ink Camel Hair
    Liquid Ink Flat
    Watercolor Camel Hair
    Watercolor Flat
    Palette Knife
    Liquid Ink Palette Knife
    Watercolor Palette Knife
  • Improved performance for Mac OS X Tiger (version 10.4).
  • "Out of memory" error no longer occurs when building certain brushes. This allows greater flexibility when creating brushes.
  • Collapsing layers with transparency and certain composite methods (blending modes/merge modes) now produce much improved results.
  • Effects - Scale no longer causes black artifacts when performed on layers containing Digital Watercolor.
  • In some instances, if Windows Regional Settings were set to non-English languages, the English and Latvian keyboard was added. This no longer occurs in Painter 9.1.
  • In Japanese version, Canvas Size dialog box translations have been fixed.
  • Translation for "Iterative Save" in German version has been corrected.

Corel Painter ReviewWorks great for me! - Version: 11.0, 3/15/2009 10:39AM PST

So far, so good! I'm not sure I would have made this a version bump but at least it is an update. I've been using Painter since it's inception and frankly 11 is the best it has ever been. Sure, it has it's idiosyncracies but so does PS.

For me it's about getting my pieces finished and looking like I want them. Painter 11 improved on both of those. I will continue to use and I'm going to try to help improve the software.

You have 30 days to evaluate the software. Use it and see for yourself.

Corel Painter CommentaryNOT an "UPGRADE"... - Version: 11.0, 3/1/2009 12:15AM PST

This is by far not a new Version or an upgrade! It is a minor update, and should priced as such. Also, bugs that had been fixed in previous versions, are there again such as horizontal pixel lines when painting and/or zooming.

When painting on layers, transparency still defaults to white unless you choose "pick-up underlying color". Blending modes introduce nasty rings and artifacts.

Photoshop files with layers are just as bad as ever, especially if you have even one layer that uses a blending mode that isn't supported within Painter (to be expected really).

The program is a very bad PC to Mac port, and uses NONE of the Mac core or development tools, nor does it adhere at all to Apple GUI guidelines.

Summary: it was developed on and for a Mac back in '86 I believe. Since then it has changed hands numerous times, and landing in the hands of Corel is probably it's death nell for us Mac users. This "version" just goes to prove it.
