Linksys BEFW11S4 v4 Troubleshooting ReportSolution for locked up wireless - Version: 1.52.03, 4/27/2005 12:55PM PST

After some time talking with linksys customer support, I have this release working. As first, it locked up my wireless as others have commented. A hard reset, and reentering all my configurations solved the problem. BTW, a hard reset is defined as "press and hold the reset button, wait 30 seconds, disconnect the power, reconnect the power, release the reset button"

Linksys BEFW11S4 v4 ReviewNo lovin' from this version. - Version: 1.52.03, 4/24/2005 08:11PM PST

Installed (after doing the filename switcheroo), reset router to default, and it locked up all of my "b" Airport laptops (3). Downgraded to previous version 1.50.14 and all was well. I hate when version details aren't included, but it was my fault for blindly upgrading. The previous version works great.

Downloader Beware.

Linksys BEFW11S4 v4 ReviewWill Not Upgrade - Version: 1.52.03, 4/23/2005 03:40PM PST

jlsterk
Tried several times with 3 different browsers. I get the failed to upgrade message. Router is working fine. Date on this upgrade says 4/07. This could be an old upgrade.

Linksys BEFW11S4 v4 ReviewGreat - Version: 1.50.14, 3/1/2005 07:07AM PST

I upgraded to this from the firmware that shipped (1.45.3).
The upgrade worked just fine in Firefox 1.0.1 on OS X 10.3.8, and took around 30 seconds. (I connected to the router via ethernet)
It adds quite a few bug fixes and new features - the most useful for me is WPA and the flashing of the 'Wireless-B' light on the front, when there is WiFi activity.
I got a brand-new user interface too (although this was also present in 1.50), which is MUCH easier to use, with some handy setup hints.

I'm connected to it right now over WiFi with my PowerBook and Airport Extreme card, with WPA enabled. Great, and very worthwhile update!

Linksys BEFW11S4 v4 ReviewSo far, so much better... - Version: 1.50.14, 7/10/2004 10:49AM PST

Has solved the occasional unexplained web dropouts, and seems to be zippier when serving multiple computers simultaneously.

This firmware update is the second one I've done on this router (from the shipped version to 1.50.10, then this one to update to 1.50.14). The updates ran fine, but it took some fiddling to get the right settings in IE. (I had no luck updating with Safari 1.2.2, build 125.8) As suggested by Linksys and others, I:

[First off, BE VERY SURE THAT THIS IS THE RIGHT UPDATE FOR YOUR ROUTER MODEL!! Check the model number AND revision number very carefully...there are at least FOUR different hardware versions of this model number alone. If there is no version number (v.2, v.4, etc.) after the model number, you have Rev. 1]

1) added the router's IP address to my list of trusted sites (http://192.168.1.1/)

2) allowed Java access to non-Java files.

3) set my software channel security to "low".

4) set logon authentication to Prompt for Username and Password.

(The settings 2-4 above are available in the Custom Settings page of the Security Zones tab of IE Preferences)

5) emptied the cache and set the browser to always refresh the cache.

6) connect to the router via Enet cable, not wirelessly.

7) after update is complete, unplug/replug router for a few seconds to soft-reset it.

I have sucessfully updated my router and one other (different model) Linksys router using this method. Remember to RESET your security and java settings when you've finished.

Linksys BEFW11S4 v4 ReviewWorks fine with my Earthlink - Version: 1.50.14, 6/8/2004 09:54AM PST

I have Earthlink Cable and this upgrade not only works fine, including USENET but it has added new security features. My performance is great also. I dumped RoadRunner a while back in favor of Earthlink.

My BEFW11S4 v4 router has been rock solid and now even better with 1.50.14 firmware upgrade.

Thank you Linksys!

Linksys BEFW11S4 v4 ReviewNot fully Earthlink compatible... - Version: 1.45, 3/26/2004 08:31AM PST

I used to have a Linksys BEFSR11, 1 port router that I used through a hub to the Mac, PC and Xbox. Everything seemed to work fine except for a few FTP issues. I "updgraded" to the BEFW11S4 v3 model as I just got an iBook a while back and wanted to get a wireless connection to it. Well, now, all of the sudden, I can't connect to any of the Earthlink usenet servers. Keeps telling me it's only for members...of which, I am...but still won't let me in. Also, the speed of my connection has dropped from around 768 down and 300 up to about 620 down and *80* up. In short, the router really screwed me up. I bought it used, so there's no chance of a refund...but maybe I can pass it off to someone who can make it work....ah well, back to the ol'BEFSR11....thanks for nothing Linksys...
