Function Keys Mapper CommentaryBeware of 4.0 - Version: 3.6, 5/30/2008 10:21AM PST

griff--2008
I just made a bad mistake. FKM just notified me that a newer version is available at:

http://alphaomega.software.free.fr/functionkeysmapper/Function%20Keys%20Mapper.dmg

I downloaded it and discovered much to my chagrin that this is a paid upgrade. Nothing in the accompanying docs informs you of this fact. The first time I discovered this was when it launched and told me that my serial number is invalid. "Nuts!" I grumbled and tried to revert to 3.6. Sorry, no go! The old serial number no longer works period! It won't work in 4.0 or 3.6.

To call this highway robbery would be to putting it mildly!

These unscrupulous guys have got a huge inventory of overpriced apps that duplicate functionality that is either included in OS X or available as free/donationware.

Butler (donationware) <http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/20035> enables you to do the same thing as does Function Keys Mapper - Mac OS X.

Function Keys Mapper CommentaryOneKey is better...much less expensive - Version: 3.5, 7/20/2007 10:12PM PST

Almost $20 bucks for a program like this seems high to me...OneKey does what this does with better integration (pref pane) and the price is $5.00.

Function Keys Mapper CommentaryPrice Tag? - Version: 2.8, 9/17/2005 06:32PM PST

I don't see a price anywhere. Why would I bother downloading this for a test drive if I don't even know the price?

I hope the developer pays greater attention to detail in the application itself.

Check out Xkeys (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/18713) for a freeware alternative. Butler does this plus a lot, lot more and is donationware. My absolute favorite is Key Xing but it's no longer available.

Function Keys Mapper CommentaryWhat about the fn key? - Version: 1.0, 7/29/2003 12:38AM PST

Any progress on inverting the fn key on PowerBooks & iBooks? It would seem that a product of this name and character would fix the problem users of Apple branded laptops face of having to press the fn key to make their function keys work as function keys. uControl came close with "Real Function Keys" feature, but they haven't yet been able to overcome the num lock hurdle, nor extend the real function keys to anything but F1-F6. It may be a firmware issue, given the workaround you can do if your system will boot into OS 9.

of Keyboard Maestro will do this, and if you can find an old free version of Youpi Key that will do it too.
