Product Description:

PDF U is a utility that will allow you to quickly turn on the "hidden" PDF Services menu that Apple has hidden (see graphic above) in the OS 10.2 print dialog boxes. Normally, you have to go to a special folder on the system, create a folder called "PDF Services" and add your own scripts. Not anymore! PDF U will not only do it quickly, but it will add it for the current user, all system users, and even remove it if you no longer want it. The best part is that we start you with a few scripts to get started. We couldn't have made it easier!

What's new in this version:

Added Mailsmith, PowerMail and Adobe InDesign Scripts.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2.4 or higher
  • Applications directory must be on your startup disk for PDF U to work correctly (no applications folders on other partitions, netinfo-changed directories, etc.) We have also received reports that this software will not work reliably with Mac OS X Server versions. This bug is supposedly fixed in Panther.

If you want to open a printout in Mail or Entourage, just place an alias to Mail or Entourage inside /Library/PDF Services/ and rename it "Mail this printout". If you want to open a printout in Illustrator or Photoshop, place an alias to Illustrator or Photoshop inside /Library/PDF Services/ and rename it "Open this printout in Illustrator". etc, etc... Do you see a pattern here? :-) No scripts needed, takes 2 minutes, works fast. If you can drag-n-drop a PDF onto an application, then you can also put an alias to the application in /Library/PDF Services/ to open printouts with that app.

I don't understand why PDF U uses scripts for this (or why we would need PDF U)? That said, the name of the program is cute :-)

What this program does is so easy to do yourself. Apple even has a page that explains exactly how...

http://www.apple.com/applescript/print/

look there and save a buck or two :)

Great system enhancement, worth $10 to me. Two requests for future updates: a script 'Email PDF with PowerMail' for us PowerMail users, and 'Open PDF in Adobe InDesign' if that's possible. I encourage those who download it to make a donation so further development on this will be worthwhile for the developers.
