FolderControl ReviewFollow up: will not reissue license to original owner - Version: 1.60, 1/10/2007 04:19PM PST

Only bad experiences with this developer.

He took the product off the market to avoid issuing me with an up to date license via Kagi.

Weeks of hassling over email to try to get a license out of him. Only when given strict instructions by Kagi to issue me - the original owner - with a replacement license, did he do so. But he took the update off the market so I couldn't have a working version of the product.

An example of a developer so paranoid and unpleasant that he gives shareware a bad name. To avoid at all costs.

I buy bushels of shareware and donate to a lot of donationware and freeware. I've never seen anything like this paronoiac.

FolderControl Reviewvery painful licensing - Version: 1.60, 10/18/2006 04:33AM PST

This is a little script to do what Neatnik used to do much better and with less trouble under OS 9. It's expensive for what it is in the first place and Derman burn you for update fees and relicensing hassle between OS X versions just for bug fixes.

Worst of all the licensing is so painful and time-consuming and invasive (we can just put up with it Photoshop or Adobe Suite as it is a core applicationi) that if shareware creators went down this path - people would just stop using shareware.

Same thing applies to upgrade licensing.

Really if you value your time stay away from this dud.

There is a much less troublesome and much cheaper ($10) set of scripts called <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/jonn8/fwm/"> Finder Window Manager</a>. ***** from versiontracker users.

Very user friendly, unlike FolderControl. Stay away.

FolderControl ReviewGood Product, Not So Great Upgrade Policy - Version: 1.60, 8/4/2005 09:29AM PST

I bought this a while back and it has been a really helpful program, but then I upgraded to Tiger which broke my version 1.4. So I downloaded the 1.6 update and now I find that I have to pay half the original price just to license it again, with no new features. Sorry, but I'm not going to pay again for a bug-fix. Guess I'm back to doing this stuff manually.

FolderControl CommentaryPretty good - Version: 1.40, 2/12/2004 03:21PM PST

Works pretty well. Just one request: it would be great if it could also copy from the parent window, both the width of the columns in list view and the size of the window's sidebar. Maybe it can do it already and I just haven't figured out how to do it.

FolderControl ReviewAlmost right for me... - Version: 1.20, 8/2/2003 08:45AM PST

I guess I'm one of those compulsively neat people when it comes to folder arrangement. I wrote an AppleScript in OS 9 that arranged things to my liking, and I've missed it very much in OS X. Folder Control does much more than my script in general, but it's missing a few critical (at least to me) features: I prefer the small icon view for folders with few files, and the list view for folders with many files. My script automatically selected the type of view based on the number of files. When there were more files than could fit in one column of the small icon view, it would intelligently resize the window to make all files visible in multiple, even columns. When there were too many files for all to be visible in the multi-column small icon view, it would switch to list view. If Folder Control had these capabilities, I would definitely register it.

FolderControl ReviewGreat product with outstanding support! - Version: 1.20, 7/30/2003 09:02PM PST

For people that like to keep their windows neat and organized (like myself), this app is a blessing. It can bog down a bit while processing huge amounts of subfolders, but this is addressed in the FAQ - just process smaller groups of folders to keep things snappy. I can't emphasize enough how helpful the developer is. I experienced some problems keeping FolderControl licensed between reboots, and Brian addressed the issue and had a fix for me within a day. v1.20 is running smoothly. And finally, the sub-program "LicenseControl" might very well be the copy-protection solution that PACE has so weakly addressed. It's working perfectly, and really addresses the user's needs as well as the software company's.

FolderControl Review  Tried this… - Version: 1.00, 4/16/2003 05:45PM PST

out and quickly paid the shareware fee. It works as advertised and with reasonable speed. Highly configurable. I had tried for months to program something like this with Applescript without success. I was hoping for something like Neatnik for OS X. It will certainly appeal to the Obsessive-Compulsives among all of us. Especially useful for CD mastering.
