Product Description:

Jurtle is a simple integrated development tool for learning to program in the Java programming language. Perfect for a high school curriculum or for anyone else just starting out.
You learn to program by writing code that moves a virtual turtle on the computer screen, drawing figures in its wake. This approach to teaching programming is patterned after Turtle Graphics in the Logo programming language.
Java + Turtle = Jurtle
After mastering the basics, Jurtle may be used to create full Java applications with their own graphical user interface (GUI).
Jurtle comes with a series of self-paced lessons allowing a novice to learn the basics of Java programming.

Note: Jurtle will run unlicensed for 10 minutes at a time. To remove this limitation you need to purchase a license.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed bug that prevented Jurtle from running on Java VMs earlier than 1.4.
  • Added button to License Panel for sending Feedback/Suggestions.
  • Added menu command for sending Suggestions/Bug Reports.
  • Removed Admin Preferences Panel. Jurtle now automatically sets the location of the tools.jar file.
  • Added new examples Swarm and Koch to the Examples directory.
  • When Jurtle is first run with a new user, we now make sure the Examples folder is added to the Recent Folders menu.

Jurtle ReviewSo far so good - Version: 1.4, 3/4/2004 07:42PM PST

I've made it through the first three lessons. I have tried learning java before from a book. So far Jurtle has been better than the books I tried to follow. It's good being able to read about the concepts and work in the program at the same time.

The developer was very prompt at clearing up problems I had.

    The writing is quite good.

Jurtle ReviewHaven't tried the lessons yet, but so far... - Version: 1.2, 1/4/2004 08:12PM PST

Well done IDE, I've been looking for something that's simple yet Just Works. This does.

There's only a few interface quirks I've noted for potential improvement at this time.
    - What would be useful for coding in general is an option in the Preferences that sets which command the apple-N key combo does: either a new turtle, a new class, or a new blank.
    - I don't generally do Turtle work yet (want to finish a different project before I try out the lessons), so it would be advantageous if I could move the divider that separates the System.out and Drawing window areas on the Display tab all the way to the top of the visual space (it stops just short, leaving a gap). Being able to move it all the way to the bottom were I to expect no System.out writing could be similarly useful (ditto).
    - A scrollbar appears across the bottom of the Edit window, regardless of whether or not I have code that extends the length of it - shouldn't it appear only when there's actually writing that extends beyond the window?

    schotti,

    [This is the author]

The link appears to be working for me at the present time. Is it possible you selected the older version from the popup menu on the page?

I would appreciate seeing more of your feedback after you have worked through the lessons.
