FireStarter FX Troubleshooting Reportcdrecord: Result too large - Version: 1.0RC1, 10/8/2009 05:17PM PST

versiontracker.mail.zooloo

I have used Firestarter FX many times successfully to create or burn iso images and am generally very pleased by its performance and usability. Today however, I managed to spoil a CD-R - for the first time (ever) with this application:

I was attempting to burn a 349 MiB iso image. When Firestarter FX reported the failure, the debug log said

...
Track 01: 192 of 348 MB written (fifo 100%) [buf 99%] 10.0x.
2009-10-08 15:17:55.383 FireStarter[623] /Applications/[...]/cdrecord:
Result too large. read error on input file
2009-10-08 15:18:04.948 FireStarter[623] Writing time: 156.141s
2009-10-08 15:18:04.963 FireStarter[623] /Applications/[...]/cdrecord:
fifo had 6145 puts and 6145 gets.
2009-10-08 15:18:04.963 FireStarter[623] /Applications/[...]/cdrecord:
fifo was 0 times empty and 5513 times full, min fill was 97%.

So, cdrecord had troubles reading the source file? I tried with another CD-R, and this time, burning stopped the moment it started, right after the countdown in the log, again complaining "Result too large". DiskUtility also failed to burn the image, so I "converted" it to cdr, and even though the resulting file turned out to be a mere copy (same sha256 checksum), it then passed the burning process without further problems.

I have no clue as to what was the culprit here.
Regardless, the advertised "simulate" option might have prevented the first CD-R from being wasted. For some reason, that checkbox is greyed out though. How is it supposed to be used?

I couldn't get Versiontrackers' download link to do anything, so here's an updated download URL: <http://www.projectomega.org/downloads/internal_products/firestarter/FireStarter_FX-1.0RC1.zip>

FireStarter FX Troubleshooting ReportBombing bug with 3rd party CD burners, plus mini-review - Version: 1.0RC1, 8/7/2008 10:22PM PST

Bombs Away! - FS FX was consistently bombing when I had my Pioneer DVR-110D attached to my MacBook. I had the Pioneer connected to provide a CD I wanted to copy.

The workaround is to eject any disc you have mounted via the 3rd party drive, then disconnect the drive. At that point you can successfully boot FS FX. Then reconnect the 3rd party drive. Mount your disc again. All works fine.

Note that setting the Preferences/General preference "Force FireStarter FX to use my unrecognized burner" does NOT help with this bug. Not having a disc mounted via the 3rd party drive does NOT help with this bug. Trashing the preferences file for FS FX does NOT help with this bug.

Mini-Review:

I don't consider it fair to give star rated reviews for beta software, which this still is. So here are some aspects of the program I found annoying.

In general I find it to be a bit touchy, requiring some more work until it is stable or actually usable by newbies. The fact that absolutely no Help is provided makes this app Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time. There isn't even any Hot Help. For example, good luck figuring out what 'Paranoia-mode' is about. Have fun playing with 'Read-raw', whatever that's supposed to be. I also have to wonder why there is a RAM setting in the Preferences, and yet another RAM setting for Image burning. Huh?!

This is clearly a fun project with promise. But for now, if I want to use a freebie CD burning app I'll stick with Apple's provided options or use the freeware app Burn, which is stable and has more abilities than FS FX. For example, Burn lets you burn data discs directly from one drive to another. That's no go in FS FX.

I'm going to continue watching the project, but I'm not keeping 1.0RC on my hard drive.

FireStarter FX CommentaryGlad to see the update - Version: 1.0RC1, 5/1/2008 03:45AM PST

The power of cdrdao on osx. Well, partly (more on that in a moment).

Nice update. It would be appropriate to allow users to turn off transparency and superfluous effects. They don't bother me personally, but some may be annoyed.

The tab fonts seem blurry. Not really worth complaining about in a release candidate, I understand.

I like the disc 'filling up' when burning, nice effect.

Thank you for turning off expiration dates.

If you really want to do something amazing and special, port gcdmaster to osx. Mac users are in dire need of an affordable (any?) true waveform toc editor for audio discs with full cdtext editing, pre-gap editing and the ability to break redbook. I have been compiling cdrdao with gcdmaster on osx for use with x11. The amount of libraries required to do this is ridiculous and even when you're through you don't get sound support. I pain myself through this because I like to hide songs in the pregap of track one on my discs. CDRDAO is unique with this capability.

CDRDAO is incredibly powerful and barely reaching potential on osx. Maybe the 'sox' utility can help behind the scenes to write headers and such.

Nice image tool. Thanks.

Hi,

it would be very handy and nice to have a feature in FireStarter that would splitt huge files/folders to multiple CD/DVDs. This would be the first non commercial application doing this - well I didn't found any other doing this than commercial software only!

Kind regards and keep on doing this good work!

FireStarter FX Usage Tip"Follow Symbolic Links" doesn't work at all! - Version: 1.0b11, 2/22/2007 07:04AM PST

Careful, it's a good way to waste a perfectly good blank! If you want to burn a data disc, you have to start by putting all your data into one folder. Links won't cut it. There is no Toast-like interface for collecting data from distant locations.
