Abandonware: Unsanity Sucks! Zero Support!

- Version: 1.4.3, 2/14/2009 10:15PM PST
MAC_1984
Unsanity has chosen to jump ship, and leave their loyal customer base screwed. DO NOT waste you money donating or buying a license as all you will be doing is throwing your money away. I deleted all my Unsanity haxies. Never again with Unsanity.

I've notified VT. The Unsanity site has the final version of 1.4.3 available. For those concerned it does NOT include the Silly Menu Animations feature. I personally will be hanging onto 1.4.3b4 for occasional silliness despite the bombing and readability problems.

silliness: great
readability of silly menus: bad
no silly adjustable slider (opacity, randomness, include your own): bad
no global off button for silliness: bad
so, let's see. three bads and one great?? hmmm, i call that a win FOR silliness. it's so refreshing and software expanding that it wins hands down.
all dev'ers should consider these types of enhancements. it's kinda why i went mac in '95. cooler.
keep ya'dome up, haxieboy. to be a leader, you gotta take heat. stay up! but do it right - a-duh, some peeps won't want it so a-drrr, put an off button!!!
*anyone got sites where i could get more animations for the menus? i'd love to load my own, even tho haxieboy has some great starts. thanks....

Menu Master Is Watching You! - Version: 1.4.3b4, 8/27/2008 05:32AM PST

I love the Silly Menu Animations. The images are lovely with fun variety. They remind me of my newbie days when I enjoyed tricking out Mac OS with a zillion different appearances and sound sets. When I'm tired of them I simply turn them off. The only thing I would add is a slider in the Preferences pane to allow me to fade the image contrast into a standard white background in order to allow readability.
However:
WHY IS MENU MASTER WATCHING ME?
Periodically, when I access one of the menus activated in Menu Master, my iSight camera on my MacBook will turn on and watch me. Apple happily built in a green light which goes on when the camera is active. The point of spying on me is what? I certainly don't see any rendition of myself in the animations.
I did some testing via Little Snitch to see if some phoning home was going on. The answer is no, thank goodness.
A couple other points about this beta version:
- Despite the 'Help' button, there is no help.
- Also, Safari bombed while I was writing this commentary. Safari does not bomb on my MacBook, period. Therefore, I have to believe Menu Master is the culprit as it is active in my Safari menus. I've also had MM bomb out the SystemUIServer process. I suspect further bombs are in store. This is all being reported to Unsanity. If I get any bombs with the animations turned off I will further post.
System: MacBook 2 GHz, 3 GB RAM, MOSX 10.4.11. (I'd be on Leopard 10.5.4 right now, except it is even more buggy than 10.4.11. 10.5.5 please!)

"Silly menu animations" is a total aberration.... - Version: 1.4.3b4, 8/26/2008 05:12AM PST

This "feature" (Silly Menu Animations) even if you can call it that, is an absolute aberration. I'd like to know who the "Huckleberry Dillinger" was, who thought this one up.
Menu Master is a great haxie, but when I select a menu, I don't want to be reminded that the "circus" is in town. I don't want camouflaged menus, I just want to "see the menu clearly".
Menu Master a definite "yes"
Silly Menu Animations an unequivocal "no, no, no, no, no".

Latest update of the otherwise-useful Menu Master Haxie introduced a REALLY stupid feature called "Silly Menu Animations" that is controlled by a checkbox on the Application Settings tab of the Menu Master Preference Pane. It is turned on by default and renders menus nearly unusable due to hugely distracting animated backgrounds.
This checkbox *may not appear* until you perform the upgrade *twice*.
This is why there are so many Unsanity-haters out there: pulling stupid stunts like this that ultimately punish their customers. Sheesh!
That said, Menu Master is highly useful for deciding how _I_ want to use my Mac.

For those who believe that Unsanity does not respond to inquiries, I suggest that you read the announcement in the yellow box at the top of their blog page that has existed for months now:
http://www.unsanity.org/archives/betas/enthusiastic_trepidation.php
I own FontCard, FruitMenu, Menu Master, and WindowShade. All of their betas have worked well with Leopard on multiple Mac's.

Party Over - Version: 1.4.3b2, 6/25/2008 07:27PM PST
MAC_1984
It appears that the party is over. Unsanity no longer responses to any inquires and the once great haxies are left stranded in limbo. It was fun while it lasted, but the transition to Leopard really never happened; Snow Leopard is now upon us.
This beta version intermittent with PhotoShop Elements 6

I've used an earlier version with OS 10.3.9 and PSE3 for a few years with no problems.
But this version, with Leopard and PSE6, works only intermittently.
Sometimes the shortcut is there; a minute later it is grayed out.

This is really an awesome app that is the only way to do certain things on the Mac -- kudos to the developers for making this Leopard compatible despite all the challenges. I had an issue with InDesign while using this program, which caused the Help menu to pop up after every action -- no matter what I did, the help menu would pop up in the middle, forcing me to hit escape to clear it. It turns out to have been related to Menu Master. Removing MM keeps the bug in place, so the fix if anyone should need it is to keep the program installed but add InDesign to the "ignore apps" list.
