This is AWESOME!!! I think the line in port can be a little misleading. I bought a $20 headset that said it was Mac compatible. Well the line in port does not provide power for the device so you have to have a USB Audio Adapter. Which you can find for about $20. So at this point just spend the money to get a headset with the USB Audio Adapter. Which I didn't want to do since I had an orginal iMic sitting around. Well guess what the iMic didn't work for what ever reason. The MacBook Pro sees it but neither the line in or out on the iMic work. UNTIL... I downloaded and installed LineIn!!! Thanks guys, this bit of software rocks!!!
It Simply WORKS...

...and that's what truly matters, in the olden days prior to OS X, the "Pass Thru" function of the "Line in Input" was easily setup, nowadays unfortunately, this is not as easily done, yes you may still access your Audio MIDI Setup located in .../Applications/Utilities/, but even that doesn't always provide the necessary amplification results needed to effectively use a Mac's Line In input (e.g. with a generic non-USB microphone, or in order to listen to your tunes or videos saved in your iPods thru your Mac's speakers.) I highly recommend LineIN and its developers at Rogue Amoeba Software, LLC, a company with which I am not associated in any way whatsoever, except as a happy customer, the price (FREE) cannot be beat.
I've successfully used this app in my Mac laptops:
15" MacBook Pro C2D 2.16 GHz
15" MacBook Pro C2D 2.33 GHz

I tried everything to get sound through my Quicksilver from my iMic adapter. LineIn worked as soon as it was installed.
Brilliant!

For some reason, you cannot minimize LineIn window with the candy buttons. The yellow minimize button which would normally put the window into the dock simply doesn't work. To put the LineIn window away, you have to select Hide Line In from the menu. A small but annoying aspect of an otherwise helpfull application.
Thank You!

This application is perfect! Simple to use, and allows me to use my Mac to play guitar or whatever else through without more complicdated applications like Pro Sound etc... Must have been reading my mind - I was really hoping for such an application. Works perfect - even allows other audio apps to run on same speakers in parallel! Thank You!
Only suggestion is to allow hiding the window once launched.

I downloaded this and it works great but I don't see, on a G5 Panther,
how to accomplish the same thing in audio/midi setup. Any help here?

I use the Mac's audio keys on the keyboard to control the volume. Running great on Mac OS X 10.5.8.
