NeXT Cube. The NeXT has the shelf in lieu of a Desktop. Perhaps TopShelf might be useful as a kind of second Dock or drawer attached to the side of the screen ala XShelf, or, even better, integrated into the Finder toolbar like it is in NeXTstep. The Desktop makes a shelf mostly unnecessary, but I can see some value in it if you've got a perpetually cluttered Desktop as I often do. Frankly, a folder in the Dock reserved for "shelfing" stuff you mean to move or copy would work just as well. I appreciate the effort, though. Amacaddict clearly didn't read the Help.

author here. I'm sorry if you don't find it useful, but I was wondering if you could provide a little more detailed feedback. If you aren't sure that it actually does anything, please check the online help. I created this in response to this article: http://arstechnica.com/paedia/f/finder/finder-7.html#shelf and have to admit that I've never used NeXT. Anyway, if someone finds it useful, great. If not, well, I suppose I've wasted time in worse ways before. Regards, Lynn
