P_BLOG ReviewRe: P_BLOG - Version: 1.0RC1, 11/13/2004 01:48PM PST

Very simple and effective product. Easy to install http://your domain.com/pblog/SETUP/index.php. Self explanatory from there just plug in variables for db host, chmod some directories, typical ease of use for any experienced php/mysql user.

What I would like to see is a full compliment of image tools built onto the backend of this sweet little app. Photoblogs are the big cheese now. Incorporate features for GD2 and ImageMajick for AutoThumb, and Image Auto Resize feature tack a gallery onto the back end and incorporate thos efeatures into your product. Do it now don't let others hack it on it spoils the overall product. The ability to easily incorporate images into any blog are required this day and age. For every other product out there unless already a "gallery" the ability to incorporate photos is a Addon or a Hack. There are numerous Open GPL gallery scripts available light code excellent operability add one now...JUST DO IT. Maybe Photostack, PixelPost. Better yet tie your product into the NEW server Web Photos Pro http://www.webphotospro.com tie your blog into this pro photo blog tool. DO IT RIGHT, BUILD THE BLOCKS, KNOCK OUT COMPETITION. MoveableT, WordP etc., incorporate image ability it is only the hackers who can truely make it work for the masses just look at their forums. P-Blog is new and fresh make it the best kid on the block for end users NOW.

thanx a lot for your advice. I'll try to find a way to make installation easy, somehow. Improvement on navigation of the install script or something.

To make admin:
Yes, there is NO admin user/pw in user_config.inc.php.
"user" and "password" stuff in user_config.inc.php means "MySQL user" and "MySQL password". You cannot login with this MySQL user id/pw for security reason.

To make "Admin" that can post or edit the entries, you have to login "ACCOUNT MANAGER" with your "MySQL user" and "MySQL password".
then, login again with the "Admin & pw" that you've created.

You don't have to edit ".htaccess". All you have to do is write your "MySQL user name" and "MySQL user pass" in "user_config.inc.php" and create a "Admin user" and "Admin pass" with "MySQL user name & pass".

I just wasted 2 hours trying to install this puppy and I admit it's impossible to figure it out. The instructions are *extremely* poor and assume you can mind meld with the author's brain. I can't.

I've done dozens of php/mysql installations in the past and this is without a doubt the most cryptic and difficult I've ever seen. I followed the instructions (brief as they are) precisely and got to a login screen for admin. After that it's anybody's guess how to set the admin username and password.

The instructions allude to setting the admin name/pw in the user_config.inc.php file but there is no setting in there for it. I tried renaming the .htaccess file and creating a password file in a private folder, that didn't work either.

Normally if an installation is this problematic I'd just trash the files and move on. The only reason I'm writing this is because I see such promise in this application and, from what I can see, the code is good and the thinking is even better. But with such a poor installation process it's virtually useless.

P_BLOG Troubleshooting ReportNo admin capability - Version: 1.0b19, 5/8/2004 01:20PM PST

I downloaded, edited user_config.inc.php, ran DB_INSTALL.php and successfully created the databases. When I go to the index.php page, however, there is a minimalist and nearly useless selection of buttons and popup menus. I also see "Welcome to P_BLOG currently no posts" with absolutely no indication of how to actually do anything. I see no way to create an account, login, add a blog, or anything that I would expect from a blogging system.

I checked the manual, which is accessible by clicking on "VARS" (huh?), but it was no help, suggesting I 'Go to the Admin page and use your user account name and password that you created in "ACCOUNT MANAGER" to login'. Huh? There is no "ACCOUNT MANAGER" I can find (certainly no link to it), and I was never asked to create a user account name or password. I don't know if there is some simple bug or missing file, or if much was changed and the instructions are outdated, but P_BLOG appears to be unusable in its present form. Understanding that the author has English as a second language, someone may want to identify the many typos for him as well.

P_BLOG ReviewGreat! - Version: 1.0b16, 11/3/2003 01:28AM PST

P_BLOG has yet lots of features to come, but it's usable, stable, and well coded as well. The guy has skill and did a very good job, clean coding, wonderful support and unbeatable enthusiasm. P_BLOG could be the easiest and "quick" weblog engine out there with pro features and full standards support (XHTML 1.1, CSS 2.0). Welcome again, P_BLOG! :-)

Easy to install. Seems to work well so far. Very nice. How do I upgrade versions without starting over?

P_BLOG Troubleshooting Reportb9 gives problems with mb_convert_encoding - Version: 1.0b9, 6/6/2003 02:21AM PST

fungibleman
OMM (PHP 4.2.0, as came with Jaguar) the system pukes when I try to add a post - "Fatal error: unknown function mb_convert_encoding in added.php".

Looking back at the code for b7, this is because they've added a function in case you're running in (say) Japanese and MySQL is in English. Or ASCII -> UTF-8.

I think that deleting the mb_convert_encoding lines might work, although searching through the folders suggests that it's been widely used here. People on English-only systems might want to stick with b7, unless they can figure out how to enable UTF-8 for their PHP.

promising. It's messy but users need to input database password each time. One star for easier admin panel.
