Product Description:

iComic is the successor to the popular iBert app. Where iBert only supported the Dilbert strip, iComic supports a plugin system that can download any comic you have a plugin for.

iComic comes with one built in plugin, with more available at http://homepage.mac.com/xmlguy/iComic/plugins.html. To request a comic or to get involved in plugin development, visit the iComic forum at http://www.webcomicforums.com/phorum/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=27.

What's new in this version:

  • Made it so the selected comic always shows as a tab. Effectively the tabs "scroll", so some of the early comics may end up on the menu, whereas before the early comics were always shown as tabs.
  • Fixed the issue with some Penny Arcade strips showing up the size of postage stamps. Turns out the jpeg files were done at 300dpi, and Cocoa was telling me the screen size, not the pixel size. Still, it wasn't hard to go get the pixel size, so I do that now.
  • Tweaked the height calculatation to leave a number of pixels, rather than using a % based calculation, as that would leave a lot of unused space of large monitors.
  • Allowed the zoom to go down to 80%, again for smaller monitors. Added an "Actual Size" menu entry to return to 100%

If you are a developer please consider picking up it's development (no development has been done for nearly 5 years) and restore it to the great app it was intended to be. Please post your progress in the Yahoo discussion group.

(I'm not the original developer, just someone who loves iComic)

iComic ReviewBeach Ball of Doom - Version: 3.0.3, 5/28/2006 10:04AM PST

This program has been one of my favorites for a long time. It saddens me that there has been no signifigant updates in forever. iComic is one of my most often crashing programs. It seems to get confused a lot, and simply shuts down. The spinning beach ball is quite annoying, too.

That being said, one can't blame the program for plug-ins breaking. The comic sites change their code from time to time. iComic does have a very good feedback group on Yahoo! where coders often fix plug-ins that break as soon as someone mentions it. I've never had to wait too long for a plug-in to be fixed.

My biggest complaint about iComic is the frequent and often unexplained crashing. I don't like widgets, so I will not be using iComic 4. I still hope for an update to iComic 3 one day. I still love this program, tempermental as it can be, and don't see myself switching any time soon. You simply can't beat the price.
