Basilisk II Troubleshooting Report256 ColorIssue - Version: 19b, 5/1/2007 12:20AM PST

nick3rdp
I can't get it to work in 256 color. I set the preferences to use 8-bit color and changed to 256 color in OS X and it still doesn't work. Every time I change to 256 color, it crashes my emulated OS on the image and I have to replace my image with the backup image that I have. Whenever I launch the OS, it just displays a gray screen and the sign that says "Welcome to Macintosh" comes up but the OS doesn't boot up. I tried several ROMs, both Performa and Quadra, CPU settings, increasing resolution, adjusted memory size, changed CPU to Quadra or IIci and it still doesn't work with 256 colors. I use the PPC binary because the Universal Binary always quits on me. The OS i'm emulating is OS 7.5.5 and my Mac is a 17-inch Macbook Pro 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo with 2 GB ram, Mac OS X 10.4.9

Basilisk II Usage TipEthernet, etc. - Version: 19b, 11/3/2006 06:05PM PST

The docs on the website indicate that this should be using a "slirp" connection for Ethernet. However, it does not appear that OSX has a slirp driver installed by default on 10.3 and 10.4, so this shows up blank and cannot be modified. It would be nice if the author addressed that issue.

An attempt to install slirp from darwinports.org resulted in some errors, and can't be installed. If I ever get this thing running I will report back.

Other than that, I've got Basilisk running apps like PageMaker, ClarisWorks, etc. Honestly, OS 7.5.3 runs fine. Once I installed 8.1, eye candy was introduced along with some PPC-only code so the Monitors & Sound control panel cannot be launched.

One thing I would really like to see addressed is CD-ROM recognition. Right now, you need to reboot with the CD mounted in order for it to show up in the emulator.

Basilisk II CommentaryThis program always uses 100% CPU - Version: 19b, 9/12/2006 01:11PM PST

This is a good enough emulator, but it always uses as much CPU as it can get its single-threaded mits on. Would it not be possible to add a sleep option, e.g. so that I can limit it to 50% CPU usage — with whatever effect that may have on emulation speed?
