Product Description:

  • In effect: converts Word documents to Adobe PDF files
  • In composition: a Cocoa front-end for the utilities antiword and ghostscript based on DOCtor
DOCtor is a utility by Stone Design that provides a front-end for an excellent utility called antiword that can only be described as "nifty". In effect, DOCtor allows you to make PostScript files from Word documents with the help of antiword, but needs another product called PStill (which costs money) to turn those PostScript files into the more compatible PDF format.

Enter Strangelove. Strangelove is an adaptation of DOCtor that depends on another (free) utility, ghostscript, instead of PStill. The end result is a utility that can take pesky Word documents and, with the right software installed, turn them directly into PDF files, readable by Mac OS X's Preview utility.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed readme typos
  • Added note about browsing to readme
  • Slightly updated icon
  • A little bit better at finding ghostscript and antiword (arbitrary guesses) - thanks, Alex and Jonas!
  • Made tool-not-found dialog text clearer

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1

Strangelove ReviewWorks well, but not well enough - Version: 1.0b2, 11/15/2005 07:49AM PST

I was excited to find and try this product, but it doesn't meet my needs.
Drat.
it will indeed convert Word files, and in a big hurry! I lose a lot of elements in the process. Headers and footers are gone. Embedded charts are gone. Tables are formatted with vertical bars instead of real lines.
Drat.
So, I recommend this application, with reservations.

Strangelove ReviewAn Incredible product - Version: 1.0b2, 1/26/2004 07:26AM PST

This is the best product on the market for conversion of Word .DOC files into PDF files that can be read and printed by Preview.

I previously tried DOCtor which worked fine but required the use of a relatively pricey product for the automatic conversion to PDF files after the initial conversion into postcript by DOCtor. The free program I used as a replacement for the pricey PDF conversion program was Preview which would take the 115KB .DOC file I started with (a file with both text and photograph) into a finished PDF file of 1.7 Megabytes in size.

Strangelove takes that same 115KB .DOC file, and in the course of about 2 seconds converts it into a finished 64KB PDF file. Same basic quality as the 1.7 MB file produced by Preview.

From a 115KB .DOC file to a slimmed down 64KB PDF file. Pretty miraculous?

Another great thing, the two additional programs needed to use this program will come automatically when you download Strangelove- and they come as Package files- no ability other than double clicking on the Package file and entering your administrator password to install Anti Word and Ghostscript (both freeware).

When its all over you double click on the Strangelove icon which brings up a square drag icon that you just drag the .DOC file onto and then 2 seconds later drag the converted PDF file off of the dragstrip into a file folder of your choice.

Strangelove ReviewYes! - Version: 1.0b2, 7/18/2003 11:13AM PST

Fatal Error
I like it, I like it a lot. :) I've never used an app before that was as simple and brilliant as Strangelove. Drag in file, drag out file. Pure genius, and it does what it's supposed to do. This app is so cool and simple I actually have fun converting files. :D
