Product Description:

Everything you need to reliably send, receive and manage faxes from any application. At the heart of FAXstf X Pro is a powerful, smartly designed new browser that handles all your faxing needs in a single window. FAXstf X Pro effortlessly allows you to view multiple documents at once, sort faxes, create your own subfolders for easy storing and reference of sent or received faxes. It is a reliable, easy-to-use solution for serious faxing demands. Fully compatible with the Apple internal modem and USB external modems (that support OS X 10.2), FAXstf X Pro fully supports any Mac OS X document-based application including Microsoft Office, PhotoShop, and Apple’s iPhoto just to mention a few. The solution not only permits background faxing to multiple recipients but also supports the Mac OS X Address Book for easy single or group fax distribution and a new that allows you to view the history of any fax transmission. FAXstf X Pro integrates seamlessly with the Mac OS X Address Book so you don’t need to open your Address Book to address a fax. Our new Quick Fax feature allows to quickly send a fax on the fly. Quick Fax allows you to send a short 1-page fax directly from FAXstf X Pro. No need to launch another application—great for a single-recipient or when you are in a hurry.

What's new in this version:

  • The Fax Options panel is now visible by default when the Fax Print printer driver is selected in the print dialog. Previously, this panel had to be selected from the printer options popup menu manually.
  • A new preference has been added to the Fax Settings preferences panel of the FAXstf Pro application to auto-launch the application when sending a fax. Note that this option is not turned on by default.
  • A new preference has been added to the Fax Settings preferences panel of the FAXstf Pro application to specify the default fax quality. Previously this was a temporary setting available only in the print dialog.
  • A problem was corrected that prevented some faxes exported as PDF from being viewable in Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • A modem issue was corrected that would randomly cause modem initialization to fail during a broadcast fax.
  • A port arbitration issue was corrected that prevented FAXstf from reclaiming the modem after it was used for a PPP Internet connection.
  • A fax can now be sent via Applescript without a cover page. In the 'create fax' command, simply omit the 'cover page' and 'cover page message' arguments.
  • When creating or renaming custom folders in the FAXstf Pro application, the "/" character is now mapped to an underscore to prevent a problem that would cause folders containing this character to disappear.
  • Vertical scroll bars will now always appear as necessary in the list of cover pages and page headers in the Cover Page preferences panel.
  • A problem was corrected that prevented multi-page faxes received at A4 letter size from being printed correctly.
  • A visual problem was corrected that would cause the Elapsed Timer of the Modem Status window to continue to run after a fax has been manually stopped.
  • The trash icon in the FAXstf Pro application will now change to show that faxes are in the trash.

FAXstf X Pro ReviewWorks poorly with 10.5.5 - Version: 10.9, 12/2/2008 04:47PM PST

I've used FAXstf for years with good success. It was never a great program but it was better than Apple's weak Fax capabilities and what little other competition there was. It was always a little persnickety but I could always get it to work. Fortunately I never had to call or ask for support. I finally did the upgrade to OSX10.5.5 (all the way from 10.4.9) and one of the few broken apps was FAXstf 10.8. I had to purchase the upgrade to 10.9 for supposed OSX10.5.5 compatibility. I depend on faxes for my business and spent pretty much a full day trying to get it to work properly with no success. This application puts files everywhere. Half of them invisible. Almost impossible to remove or find everything it installs (in true Windows fashion). Tech support barely read my emails (replied with canned responses for morons) and I can't afford three or four days of email back-and-forth while I beta test their product. This is a buggy and barely functional application that I would say is barely supported by Smith Micro (hell, you have to TRY to find it on their website). Make sure, if you're determined to own it, to download their fixes and utilities (FaxPrint Installer and Fax Magic) that are required to allow you to spend at least a few hours of entertaining troubleshooting. Bummer.

So, I finally gave up and started looking for an alternative. Last time I had checked there was nothing comparable. This time I found PageSender and it saved my butt. Installed in a snap with minimal intrusion. It just works, like a good Mac app should. I was even able to salvage, with some work, my cover pages. I was up and running in a fraction of the time it took me to unsuccessfully troubleshoot FAXstf.
All I can say is good riddance to SmithMicro and I'm headed right over to PageSender to give them 4 stars. Also, PageSender is $10 cheaper!

10.9 and Leopard 10.5 -> 10.5.4 work super, but not 10.5.5

FAXstf X Pro ReviewA bit more robust than the OSX faxer - Version: 10.9, 7/14/2008 09:45PM PST

I have used this and have had no problems. I updated my system and hard drive and tried to use the built in OSX Fax ability and couldn't get it to do what I wanted (rearrange pages, try again when it got a busy signal).

I like the new features, the interface with Addressbook, the ability to rearrange fax pages. The best thing however vs. the built in Faxer if if you get a busy signal it will try again automatically. If it errors out you can change the fax number and try again, a lot better than having to rescan again.
