Product Description:

Keith's Image Stacker is an image processing program that is oriented primarily toward astrophotography. What Keith's Image Stacker provides, more than anything else, is a workspace in which to align many similar images (say from a quicktime movie of the moon, a planet, or a series of long exposures of a deep-sky object, taken through a telescope with a webcam) and then to produce a stack of the images, which consists of a single image that comprises the average of the individually stacked images. Stacking images is a well-established method for increasing the signal-to-noise ratio in a series of similar images. True "information" will shine through the stack, while random noise will drop out.

What's new in this version:

  • Images larger than 640x480 open into a window that is constrained to 640x480 max, to prevent the window falling off the bottom of the screen. You can increase the size after the image is opened if you want.
  • Made a custom cross hair cursor that shows up on dark and light backgrounds and has an empty center to see the pixel under the cursor
  • The zoom box in the title bar of the image windows toggles back and forth between the image dimensions and 640x480 for images larger than 640x480.
  • The Clips Window is painted black instead of white in the spare lower right corner, to match the black empty Frame Inspector Window.

to modify this application to increase depth in a series of images of the same subject taken at slightly different focus? For example, in macrophotography where any single image tends to have a very narrow depth of field.

maybe you can extend the program to where it can auto guide telescopes for astrophotography. As far as I can tell there are no OS X programs that do this. this would open up new possibilities on the Mac.
