I have had a macintosh for about 30 months now, and have been using dekstasy since very early days. This is my first review - I am not really qualified to do this review because it is the only mixing program I use. I tried several others - not including traktor. The two whose programmers were in a dispute about who created the skins? I didn't find either any good. I am completely satisfied with dekstasy and I use it (alongside Wiretap) to:
-make a speeded-up or slowed-down version of a particular tune.
-just mix two songs together.
-do proper mixes (my longest so far has been 3 hours 13 minutes).
Downside -- you have to analyse the bpm of every tune you intend to mix, beforehand. I found it very easy to learn, but it will take a long time and a lot of patience (the documentation is quite extensive but I didn't really rely on it). However, this means that (if you've done it right) things will never ever go out of sync when you are actually mixing. Doesn't that make sense? It has got nothing to do with real decks. (I was never that good anyway...) (And I bet you aren't either. Do yourselves a favour...)
It uses a lot of CPU but that's not a problem for me because I will hardly be using the computer for anything else whilst mixing.
I find it easy to use, the graphic representation of the decks is perfect, and it is very stable & dependable. Sometimes crashes when you pull the needle back once a tune has finished, to play the last few seconds again. Also, when you set a track to loop, sometimes it eventually skips a few beats or bars. Could use a little polish but I appreciate that this is freeware.
The only real problem I have is that the eq's only cover two decks, so mixing with three or four decks, you will not be able to play with all the eq's. Apart from this, it is very easy to mix on three decks. You can 'line up' the next couple of songs in advance on the spare decks, then just switch the eq routing once one of the current tracks has finished. Easy!
I have concentrated on the problems I have come accross whilst using the software, but in general I think it's amazing. I can't believe that there are so few positive reviews of this software. Go and have a look at their website if you're still unsure.

ive used this program on various occasions for making mixes, but find its bollocks for doing sets or any extensive length of mix. the most useful thing is being able to mix two tracks together fairly easily but keeping a chain going is nigh on impossible to do effectively. ive had a laugh putting ff7 midis with greasy drumand bass and other stuff, but have had to export them seperately and mix them up elsewhere. not really a great dj kit in my eyes, but has its uses. if you wanna seriously do the spin then buy some decks or use traktor, its much better. but as i said this was a free program and aint all bad.

This app is rediculous, has this guy ever actually worked as a real DJ?? Or just pretend in the basement?
Nothing touches TraktoDJ, it'll cost you some buck but you won't be wasting your time.

to add a song to the library you need to analyze the bpm. did the author of this thing ever think about how long this will take for 15000 songs?? lol. I'm looking forward hearing the first song next week. :)
and second: that action bar isn't actually userfriendly, i think. Further the app needs definitely too many ressources. 70% processor on a G4/667 is not acceptable.

i was looking forwartd to using this software, only to find out i am afraid that it is the biggest pile of poop that i've ever senn! a lot more work is needed on this freeware to make it user friendly! sorry guys

to import mp3s:
1. Go to Import tab
2. Change import preferences in the options at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen (I prefer to keep imported mp3's in their original place)
3. Select Import from the drop-down menu (the one that says "Action")
4. Once song is imported, you might want to detect BPM.
5. Go to Songs tab, highlight song from list, and choose Cue Track from the drop-down menu (the one that says"Action")
6. Go to Decks tab; you should now see a waveform of your song.

I agree with Soulpilot and Twisted Guy - this is an awesome program. Tons of features, easy to use, etc. But the problem is in the interface - it could use some more streamlining, esp. with cueing and mixing tracks. I tend to think the Deck and Mixer panels should be combined into one panel, or at least put the deck controls (play, stop, loop, etc.) on the Mixer panel as well.
Overall tho, very nice, and free! :)

blown away at how great this software is!!! I mean amazing software that ACTUALLY does what it claims to do. As far as changes- I'd like to see a better import of files from iTunes cause I got a week and a half ahead of me aynalizing songs - creating crates - etc, also it would be SO helpful to have a play buttons for the decks on the mixer page so I can drop a song and then fade. But once again to reiterate the quality of of this version - THE BEST MIXING SOFTWARE I've come across!!!!(and belive me as a club DJ I've been searching) soulpilot@mac.com ;)

incredible software. The UI is great, but a bit sluggish. Could use a little more streamlining and automation for performing crossfades, looping, and song queueing, but that isn't all that necessary because this is a club/live DJ app, though it would be nice in the future. A little more zippiness and responsiveness, and some extra automation (even AppleScript support or something like that) would make this perfect.
the only problems i've encountered with this product or minor gripes i have are -
sometimes it doesnt let you delete a track, you have to quit out and then delete it when you re-open the program.
sometimes if you set a track to loop it will start to skip a bit if you leave it going for a while (or you are clicking quickly with the other decks)
i don't like the way that you have to swap from the decks screen to the mixer screen to play a track and then fade it in. if you could start the track playing from the mixing screen it would be much easier.
it would be nice to be able to set "cue points" or "hot points" on tracks, but this is asking heaps of a free program which does everything else so well.
it would be nice to be able to make the display larger if you wanted.
Other than that, this program is great and quite intuitive to use - ie. once you work out how to import songs quickly (which is really easy and qucikly answered in the FAQ) then you can start playing around without any previous "DJing" experience.
