Product Description:

The Yahoo! Widget Engine (formerly known as Konfabulator) is a JavaScript runtime engine for Windows and Mac OS X that lets you run little files called Widgets that can do pretty much whatever you want them to. Widgets can be alarm clocks, calculators, can tell you your WiFi signal strength, will fetch the latest stock quotes for your preferred symbols, and even give your current local weather.

What sets Yahoo! Widget Engine apart from other scripting applications is that it takes full advantage of today's advanced graphics. This allows Widgets to blend fluidly into your desktop without the constraints of traditional window borders. Toss in some sliding and fading, and these little guys are right at home in Windows XP and Mac OS X.

The format for these Widgets is completely open and easy to learn so creating your own Widgets is an extremely easy task.

For the "skinning" crowd, Yahoo! Widget Engine is a dream come true. You can easily change the look, feel, layout, even functionality of a Widget so that it matches your lifestyle, your desktop, or the pants or skirt you have on that day.

What's new in this version:

  • Fixed bug which cause HUD-only Widgets not to work correctly.
  • Fixed bug which caused hOffset and vOffset in XML for Windows not to be honored (causing some Widgets to display "off screen" and not visible).
  • Fixed occasional hang when editing preferences.
  • Removed restriction on dragging windows above the screen (a few pixels of the window always remain visible so it can moved again).
  • Report -1 when no network connection to yahooLogin for Purple Box (Yahoo! Login).
  • Allow null parameter to be passed to Send() in XMLHttpRequest for compatibility with other browsers.
  • Improved behavior when displays are disconnected and reconnected.
  • Fixed bug where TextArea.thumbColor causes an error on the Mac but not on Windows.
  • Fixed bug which caused horizontal scrollbars not to work.
  • Fixed problem where 'this' was not being set in a context menu's onSelect function.
  • Fixed issue which corrupted secure preferences under certain circumstances.
  • Fixed bug which caused focusWidget() to make the main window visible even if another window is already visible.
  • Fixed bug which caused window positions to be lost when the Widget fails to display due to an error.
  • Fixed some issues with the Finnish localization.
  • Fixed product name displayed in Debug Window.

Too much of a CPU hog for me. Yahoo too much like Microbloat in its invasiveness. Next please.

This latest version with the strip consumes 40-50 per cent of my CPU activity continuously and keeps my hard drive spinning 70 per cent of the time. A bad bummer.

Yahoo! Widget Engine ReviewLast Nail in the Coffin - Version: 4.0.3, 7/12/2007 11:46AM PST

Yahoo has finally driven the last nail in the coffin for Konfabulator with its new Weather widget.

I have been using Konfabulator since its inception and as Yahoo has "added functionality" it has only succeeded in overloading and bloating the memory footprint. I have slowly stopped using my favorite widgets one by one.

The only widget I had left on my desktop was Weather. And now with the new [unwarented / unwanted] interface I have turned off Yahoo Widget Engine (bad name too) completely and removed it from my startup items.

Why does Yahoo have to ruin everything they touch?
