Too much of a CPU hog for me. Yahoo too much like Microbloat in its invasiveness. Next please.

This latest version with the strip consumes 40-50 per cent of my CPU activity continuously and keeps my hard drive spinning 70 per cent of the time. A bad bummer.

Yahoo Widget Engine ReviewLast Nail in the Coffin - Version: 4.0.3, 7/12/2007 11:46AM PST

Yahoo has finally driven the last nail in the coffin for Konfabulator with its new Weather widget.

I have been using Konfabulator since its inception and as Yahoo has "added functionality" it has only succeeded in overloading and bloating the memory footprint. I have slowly stopped using my favorite widgets one by one.

The only widget I had left on my desktop was Weather. And now with the new [unwarented / unwanted] interface I have turned off Yahoo Widget Engine (bad name too) completely and removed it from my startup items.

Why does Yahoo have to ruin everything they touch?

Yahoo Widget Engine ReviewVersion 4 very intrusive - Version: 4.0, 3/27/2007 07:51PM PST

The few widgets that still work now stay on the desktop all the time instead of only appearing when I invoke F8. I have searched and searched and can find no configuation option in ver 4 to get the widgets back to normal.

Yahoo Widget Engine ReviewVersion 4 won't even run on my Mac... - Version: 4.0, 3/23/2007 08:27AM PST

Version 4 doesn't launch on my dual 2GHz G5 running Mac OS 10.4.9. When I double-click on the app's icon, nothing happens. Version 3.1.5 runs fine.

Yahoo Widget Engine ReviewKonfabulator was simpler and more reliable in its earlier versions - Version: 4.0, 3/22/2007 03:20PM PST

The Dock??? I'm sorry I really don't think it makes Yahoo Widget Machine more reliable just an unnecessary addition. The Widget Machine seems to be leaning in the direction of Windows in many of the widgets. The Mac Platform seems to be getting more and more on the backburner.I bought the original Kinfabulator when it was new and Arlo Rose took a deep interest in the Application. Dashboard vs Yahoo Widget Machine? I'll take Dashboard any day as it is simple and failsafe.I'll give this version 4 Stars anyway as nothing crashes and it seems somewhat reliable.

How do I get "recent widgets" to work? It's grayed out on all my powerPC macs. It's working on Intel macs. This problem persists in this recent update. I threw out the .plist file and started over and that didn't fix the problem.

Yahoo Widget Engine CommentaryMassive performance/memory footprint improvement - Version: 4.0, 3/22/2007 08:35AM PST

Version 4 is very impressive in terms of memory and CPU usage. They also added a "Dock" for widgets which works similar to OS X dock. No worries, you can disable.

I have finally decided to enable widgets at startup.

A must try definitely especially if you want same widgets setup on Windows and Mac.

Yahoo Widget Engine Commentarymemory leak - Version: 3.1.5, 8/2/2006 03:30PM PST

There are some widgets that gradually grow in memory usage. One in particular goes up to 150mb in a day, when it started out closer to 10. The iTunes controller that is packaged with the installation does this too, though not as much.

It seems to me that for an application like this, good garbage collection is a necessity. They should definitely work on that.

Anyway, I do like having small, simple applets to do my small simple tasks, and this is a good solution. I like it better than the Tiger Dashboard because of the options for widget visibility (eg desktop, or float). Now, if only I could script a widget in Ruby, or better yet, jRuby!

So is there a Yahoo! Messenger Widget to replace the poor Mac OS X IM client?! Now THAT would be useful...
