Where is my disk space? ReviewNice little program - Version: 1.2, 3/22/2009 04:21PM PST

tmcdanel
It is worth the shareware fee. It does what it does quite quickly and efficiently. I have used it for years and recommend it. I hope the author continues to support it.

and once I have a list of all the files on it, I can sort the list in a multitude of ways. And of course, it does so much more as well, which justifies the extra expense IMHO.

The features that you get when you register probably make this program worth the $10, but for what you get without registering, you can get much of the same (and in some ways, more) information with this Terminal command:
du -k /|grep -v /dev/fd/|sort -rn>~/Documents/filesize.txt
That'll take a while to run on a large disk (I've got an 800MHz G4, 189GB used, it took five minutes), and it won't give you the file type like this program does, but it gives you the breakdown by directory in the same output (this is available as a separate button within the program). Incidentally, the file is tab-delimited, suitable for importing into a spreadsheet.
$10 is probably worth it for many people. Not me, but I'm a old-time Unix geek.

It does what it says it does, and it does it fairly quickly, despite the 100,000+ files on my boot drive. GUI is pretty plain, but not a problem. Helped me quickly find the reason why my HD had been whittled away (multiple backups of a 27MB database, which I had configured the related program to do, but had forgotten).

This would be enhanced if it gave more information about the found files, and indicated whether they can be safely deleted, but that's an enormous task for a shareware author to undertake and I wonder if people would see enough value in it to justify what such an additional feature of this size would cost to collect the data (ongoing, of course) and implement.

I haven't used it on my auxilary disks yet, but I'll bet the search for duplicates feature will help me save huge gobs of space.

Clicking "Download Now" just results in a window that says "Nice try..." Was able to download directly from developer's website though.

Where is my disk space? CommentaryMacUnikorn, I limited… - Version: 1.0, 4/8/2003 01:14AM PST

it to 500 for three reasons. 1. Your disk may have 200,000 files on it (like mine does) and it would take too long to build up a table of 200,000 files. 2. It would take too much RAM. and 3. Are you really interested in the files that only take up 4K? You worst files are likely to be in the top 500. If you do not want to see all your MP3s then select Ignore this file type and I will show the next largest 500 files ignoring MP3s. starfinder33 - Thanks for putting kf97mopa straight. I know nothing about unix and even typing du -k / gave me no information that was useful in finding my largest files.

know u are a unix wiseguy and that you dont really need OSX coz all you use is the terminal. buzz off mate! This app can be very handy for quickly finding what is eating up your diskspace, especially if you are not a miracle in the terminal.
