Product Description:

PreFab UI Browser is the "ultimate assistant" for Apple's GUI Scripting technology for AppleScript. It helps you to explore, manipulate and monitor the user interface of most Mac OS X applications. It understands the arrangement of their user interface elements and enables you, with a single click, to generate useful AppleScript statements to control and automate them. Free upgrade for existing customers.

What's new in this version:

  • Navigation in UI Browser is now greatly enhanced after a window or other container in the target application is closed or hidden.
  • Clicking the Refresh button removes all destroyed elements from the main browser view and adds all newly-created elements, such as new windows, just as it did before, but it maintains the current element selection undisturbed so you can continue working with it.
  • A new preference setting has been added, allowing UI Browser to display all accessibility names in plain English (the default) or using technical accessibility API names such as "AXWindow", "AXPress", "AXRoleDescription" and "AXWindowCreated".
  • UI Browser's AppleScript menu now generates scripts designed for use solely in Mac OS X 10.3 Panther or newer. Some new scripts are generated, and others have been enhanced for more comprehensive GUI Scripting support.
  • You can Command-click on elements and user controls in UI Browser while UI Browser is behind the target application, without bringing UI Browser to the front.
  • When running under Mac OS X 10.3 Panther, the Actions, Attributes and Notifications columns in the main UI Browser window's drawers are now sorted by name. Attributes can also be sorted by Type by clicking the Type column header, to make it easy to see, for example, all UI element attributes together.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher
  • Mac OS X 10.3 recommended
  • Mac OS X 10.3 for GUI Scripting

UI Browser is fantastic. It will show you exactly what is in the UI that can be read or acted upon, and even test the action for you. The biggest advantage for me is that I know right away if an interface item is going to respond to a certain syntax, and I can try a bunch of different syntax right there in the browser. Worth it at twice the price. This utility is not just for heavy-duty scripters. It would be great for beginners looking to script an app that is otherwise not scriptable.

First I was excited and trilled when Apple introduced "GUI Scripting" but when PreFab has lauched "UI Browser" that was even better!

Of course you can be satisfied by Apple's UI Element Inspector but that was not enough for me; too much work...

The list of feature of "UI Browser" is not only impressive but fill the need of serious and experienced scripter who look for efficiency. As a solution developer I need good tool and "UI Browser" worth every penny asked for it, so I spent more time on my project and less on the collecting info and data to create my project's script.

Even Apple recommanded "UI Browser" on their site and as mentionned there:

"And for those desiring an easier, less technical means of generating script statements for UI elements, visit Prefab Software's website for the Prefab UI Browser, an easy-to-use UI scripting utility;"

isn't that talk by it self!

Over ten unique features make me to say: Serious people need serious tool!

I installed it a while back and finally got back to look at it, and it has already expired. From the brief look a month ago, I couldn't find much to recommend it. And the price, for the utility it provides me, it outrageous.
