Product Description:

PithHelmet blocks image, javascript, Flash ads and GIF animations. It can also collapse blocked content so that it is hidden from view. Fully customizable by editing blocking rules and other settings in a custom addition to the Safari Preferenences pane.

What's new in this version:

  • completely new blocking mechanism based on new WebKit documentation from Apple (much more reliable, fixes many bugs)
  • added GIF-wrangler functionality to control whether GIF animations play Always, Once or Never
  • added a new rule set "Exempt Sites" which disables all PithHelmet blocking/hiding for any page matching this group of rules
  • new contextual menu item "Never block content from " - adds a site to the "Exempt Sites" group
  • sites that are in the location bar do not get blocked (this prevents accidental blocking when you type in a url that matches a block rule)
  • enabling PithHelmet is now saved as a preference (the "Block Filtered Content" menu item) between Safari sessions
  • added a separate preference for hiding content that is linked to advertising content
  • blocked content checks for a substitute file (this prevents annoying question mark/missing image graphics from loading even with content hiding disabled)
  • content from localhost and file:/// is never filtered
  • "Block Images from server" contextual menu item now includes the name of the server that will be blocked
  • content and error messages are now fully localizable (for info on becoming a translation volunteer see PithHelmetLocalization)
  • German Localization by Johannes Hoffmann
  • added some new Help menu items to the preference pane contextual menu - mostly on the subject of regular expressions
  • added "Revert to Factory Rules..." contextual menu item - this will remove all custom rules and restore the default set of rules that PithHelmet shipped with (it makes a backup copy of your customized rules first, just in case)
  • Hide Blocked Content has been rewritten to limit the number of links it examines on a page - this fixes the very slow performance reading message digests which could contain ~1000 or more links on a single page
  • merged url and domain-specific rules - this is only a UI change and should simplify the rule editor

Anyone tried this with 10.5.8 and Safari 4.0.4?

PithHelmet Troubleshooting ReportDoesn't install - Version: 3.0b2, 11/17/2009 10:49AM PST

dtempleton
OS 10.6.1, Safari 4.03
Pithhelmet 3.0b2 downloads, unpacks and proceeds to install "for all users".

Safari starts automatically, but there is no Pithhelmet tab in the preferences window, and ads are not blocked. Tried re-installing three times with similar effects, and no Pithhelmet installed, apparently.

Thanks

I have missed it, since it's the only ad blocker I know of that works silently in the background and doesn't pop up questions every few seconds. I was sad when the previous beta worked neither with Safari 32 or 64 bit, but this version works correctly with my 64 bit Safari. I will wait patiently for the smoothing of the jagged edges and the addition of a proper preference pane, I understand that this is a lot of work for Mike Solomon, and I want to congratulate him on the great effort he has made so far, thank you Mike.
