PithHelmet Troubleshooting Report4.0.4 - Version: 3.0b2, 11/17/2009 07:10PM PST

Cowicide
Anyone tried this with 10.5.8 and Safari 4.0.4?

PithHelmet Troubleshooting ReportDoesn't install - Version: 3.0b2, 11/17/2009 10:49AM PST

dtempleton
OS 10.6.1, Safari 4.03
Pithhelmet 3.0b2 downloads, unpacks and proceeds to install "for all users".

Safari starts automatically, but there is no Pithhelmet tab in the preferences window, and ads are not blocked. Tried re-installing three times with similar effects, and no Pithhelmet installed, apparently.

Thanks

I have missed it, since it's the only ad blocker I know of that works silently in the background and doesn't pop up questions every few seconds. I was sad when the previous beta worked neither with Safari 32 or 64 bit, but this version works correctly with my 64 bit Safari. I will wait patiently for the smoothing of the jagged edges and the addition of a proper preference pane, I understand that this is a lot of work for Mike Solomon, and I want to congratulate him on the great effort he has made so far, thank you Mike.

PithHelmet CommentaryIs it working for anybody…?! - Version: 3.0b1, 10/9/2009 04:25PM PST

Yeah, I get that it's a beta version and I don't mind that the prefs are not accessible right now -- but is it actually doing anything at all…?! All it does for me is put the helmet icon into my menu bar, but it doesn't seem to be blocking any ads on any websites…

PithHelmet Troubleshooting ReportHelp, please: 3.0b1 installer hangs at "destination select" - Version: 3.0b1, 10/7/2009 03:21PM PST

nnager
I've found PithHelmet exceptionally valuable over the years. I've experienced no delays. But I run into a glitch right after I click on "Destination Select." The two destination options display with the top one lightly highlighted. Neither destination can be selected. The "Continue" button is gray and the only visible choice is "Go Back" The old PithHelmet 2.8.5 (85) installer, on the other hand, displays the top option for destination with darker highlighting and a workable "Continue" button.

Safari version: 4.0.3 (5531.9)
SIMBL version: 0.97
OS: 10.5.8
Mac: Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5

Please share an installation troubleshooting hint.

Respectfully, Norm

PithHelmet ReviewGiving up on PithHelmet - Version: 3.0b1, 10/7/2009 08:22AM PST

I've been using PithHelmet for years, even sticking with it when newer versions of Safari would make it stop working. The bottom line is that it gets rid of ads. The problem, though is that noticeable delay that PithHelmet causes. When browsing to a new page or opening a new page, there is a delay of several tenths of a second. This would not normally be something that I would notice, except when using Safari's new "Top Sites" feature. It seems that the delay is additive in Top Sites, and the delay would cause Safari to stall for several seconds to tens of seconds, which is totally unacceptable. As an experiment, I ditched PithHelmet, and now new sites display instantly, including Top Sites. For now, I'm using a different free ad blocker, and it seems to be running flawlessly with no delays.

b1 doesn't work for me. It's nice to know progress is being made on an update, though.

PithHelmet Commentary3.0b1 is a "very early beta" - Version: 3.0b1, 10/7/2009 04:39AM PST

And the lack of Preference controls prove the developer's warning. But if your getting an error loading PH 2.8.5 under Snow Leopard (with Safari in 32 bit mode), this does seem to be functioning "as-is" and for the purpose.

PithHelmet CommentaryWhat the developer says about PH in Snow Leopard - Version: 2.8.5, 9/10/2009 09:47PM PST

Folks,
Here's what the developer himself says:
http://culater.net/software/PithHelmet/PithHelmet.php
PH "sort of works" when Safari is in 32-bit mode. He's working on a 64-bit solution, but is "having a lot of trouble."

PithHelmet CommentaryDoes PH Work With Snow Leopard? - Version: 2.8.5, 8/29/2009 05:55AM PST

I have tried the unofficial fix (changing the max bundle bit), but am unable to get PH to work with Sl.

Might someone know the secret to PH success or where I may have messed up?

Your comments most appreciated.
