Translation Service ReviewSnake Oil - Version: 1.2.6, 7/17/2006 10:39AM PST

So this thing uses resources from Systran or similar services that claim to provide machine "translation". Let's get real! Except for a few very narrow applications, so far no machine has been able to provide reliable translations. These systems do not provide translation, but merely blind word-swapping.

Basic illustrations: as of today, if you try to translate "Safe for children" into French, the system spits out *Coffre-fort pour des enfants* ("Safe to lock children in"). And "no preservatives" is rendered by *aucuns préservatifs* ("no condoms", together with a ridiculous grammatical error)
And thanks to Systran and the rest of them, these ridiculous phrases actually find their way on product packaging made in various English-speaking countries.

All that machine translation business is pure snake oil that has been successful only at ripping off individuals who don't know much about languages, as well as each and every one of us through sales to government agencies and to publicly traded companies...

Translation Service ReviewI couldn't get it to work on Mac OS X 10.3.9 - Version: 1.2.5, 7/5/2006 04:45AM PST

I couldn't get it to work on Mac OS X 10.3.9.

Each time I highlighted my text and tried to execute a translation, an error message said, "please connect to Internet." But I am already connected to the Internet, see, I just downloaded your software! No, my firewall isn't running.

This was a major malfunction with no instructions or help text available. Sorry, I've just moved the application to the trash and emptied it.

I'll stick to Systran.

this program translates "You Are" (english) to "usted soy" (spanish)

if you don't speak spanish, that is "You AM"

after trashing it,it does not remove it's Service menu, perhaps it will be gone after I restart.
