Intego ContentBarrier X5 ReviewDoes what it says - Version: 10.5.5, 10/20/2009 06:41AM PST

dsphelps
Unlike the previous reviewer, I don't have any problem with Facebook behaving badly with ContentBarrier--it works fine. Overall, the program seems to work very well, and was easy to set up, Nice, easy to understand GUI. Ability to access settings and reports over the web is very handy--actually essential for me--but I find the web interface to be a little tedious, when it comes to getting more info on the computer's activity--I have to click on a lot of links to get to the detail. It has also blocked some things that didn't really need blocking. Haven't had to use support, but the documentation is clear. Overall, easy to use and does what it says. I would recommend anyone with kids take a look at it.

Intego ContentBarrier X5 CommentaryContent Barrier causes Facebook to crash. Horrible Customer service - Version: 10.5.5, 10/8/2009 12:22PM PST

Dear community. This is not the first, second, third, fourth, fifth time I have had issues with Intego. I have given Itego 6 years of customer purchase support and I finally give-up! I will stick with Little Snitch or other products. There support is just the worse!

Do not buy!!!!!

Issue:
Completing a form on Facebook such as: creating a message, responding to a wall post or even posting a status causes Safari to crash. It crashes if you "copy as past as well as EVERY time hitting the return key". What happens is, I create a message and if I hit the return key, an Apple beach ball appears and then Safari crashes. Also, this happens if I type too much date in the form fields or copy and paste.

I created a ticket with Apple. They emailed me a file that captured the certain system information. They replied, Intego is the issue. I erased my hard drive, installed OS 10.5 and then upgraded to 10.6.1 and ONLY installed the intego products: content barrier 10.5.5, file guard 10.5.2, netbarrier 10.5.5, netupdate 10.5, personal antispam 10.5.4, personal backup 10.5.6, virus barrier 10.5.10.

I am able to stop the behavior if I uninstall content barrier. It does not matter if content barrier is enabled or disabled. It crashes Safari if it is on or off.

Intego ContentBarrier X5 ReviewDon't trust X5 - Version: 10.5.4, 5/6/2009 07:16AM PST

I've been using CB since version 3. It worked as advertised - blocked the sites I wanted blocked. I have a small issue with X4 on my son's PPC using most of the CPU cycles, but killing the process and restarting usually fixed that.

When X5 came out I bought it immediately. They cleaned up the gui. Unfortunately, they also killed the ability to handle network clients (users with their home directory on another machine). This made the product completely unusable for me because my kids all have network accounts. I called tech support and their response was that they never "officially" supported network accounts. I finally got hold of a marketing person and tried stressing how important that feature was.

I did get a refund.

I've tried every new update since X5 came out and they still don't support network clients reliably. I discovered in my test of 10.5.4 that a PPC iMac wasn't blocking anything. I uninstalled and reinstalled twice and still couldn't get it to function properly. I don't trust X5 and will be sticking with X4 for the foreseeable future.
