LameBrain CommentaryProject is dead... - Version: 0.6.1, 12/26/2007 10:41AM PST

decadence

From author's own website: "I lost interest. I didn't use the application myself."

After hunting around, I recommend anyone looking for properly tagged Lame encoded MP3's use iTunes-Lame Encoder (now on Google code and open source after Alcor also lost interest).

I have also used/tested Audion (PPC only, also dead) and Max (great encoder, lousy tagging) and XLD-GUI (absolutely toxic).

LameBrain Troubleshooting ReportProblems saving settings? - Version: 0.6.1, 11/15/2004 04:15PM PST

I liked using this program except that it seemed to just ignore adjustments made to the settings. For instance I set it to not eject the cd after ripping. Saved the preferences. Re-opened the prefs pane and the Eject CD button was checked again. Same after restart. This was also a problem in that it just would not rip in full stereo no matter what I set it to (both with the pulldown menus and using the command line). I'm not sure if I installed it wrong or something (being a recent convert from pc to mac), but damn that's annoying.

LameBrain ReviewA tip ... - Version: 0.6.1, 12/1/2003 01:20PM PST

Finally, I am happy with LB. With the developer's approval I am using LAME v.392.1 (preferred by audio snobs, of which I'm not - too damn old) and it works flawlessly. Just track down the codec and replace the file in the bin folder. I've pushed NMP3 Ripper forever. Now, this may be the real deal.

LameBrain ReviewBest MP3 Encoder Available - Version: 0.6.1, 9/13/2003 04:24PM PST

Audion is great, but ever since it moved to OSX, it's not stable anymore. iTunes offers super-fast, but inferior ripping in my opinion. In spectral tests, the LAME encoder has come out on top. (The r3mix profile is tops in my box for bytes/sound quality) NMP3 Ripper takes forever and won't encode songs with some international/unicode characters. --Stinks to get an entire album ripped except for the one with the umlaut in it. :)

This application is fast, is just like the PC counterparts, up to date with LAME and pretty stable. I look forward to the next release!

Note to authors: could you fix the cd refresh, for when I'm ripping multiple cds and perhaps make the lame/bin path automatically reset (maybe a search) if I move the application.

LameBrain ReviewExcellent - Version: 0.6.1, 8/19/2003 11:37AM PST

As far as i can tell nmp3 ripper cannot encode mp3s or any tracks on your drive which Lamebrain can.
I prefer Lamebrain to Audion, even though ripping with audion is faster but that is the fault of Lame as everyone knows, not Lamebrain.

LameBrain ReviewLAME still best way to go - Version: 0.6.0, 5/18/2003 01:53PM PST

This is a very good GUI for LAME! LAME with expert settings at --alt-preset standard -Z or simply --alt-preset standard, when listened to via a good stereo system is noticeably better than AAC at 192 and higher. Encoding is really slow, but if you like your music, MP3 via LAME is still the way to go. This version of LameBrain is great. Congratulations for all the hard workl

LameBrain ReviewNah - Version: 0.6.0, 5/18/2003 11:47AM PST

Unremarkable
Slow, as it doesn'ttake advantage of Altivec. Plus, confusing interface. And, couldn't for the life of me get it to use a constant bitrate.

LameBrain ReviewR_Adept at reading Instructions? - Version: 0.6.0, 5/18/2003 10:40AM PST

K.K.T.
This is a really great program. I does what it should, well. I appreciate the revisions to the interface--it's getting more intuitive to use. There are a few things I would like to see: when something like --alt-preset standard is selected (although "alt" is dropped in the newest releases of lame; it's just '--preset' now) all other setting should be reset. Although it says "these override other settings" it does confuse the newbies. My only other complaint isn't the authors fault: I wish lame was a whole lot faster...
