Product Description:

TinyBooks is a simple, flexible, non-bloated, single-entry bookkeeping and accounting system for the Macintosh. TinyBooks is designed for Sole Proprietors, home and other small businesses, and family finances. TinyBooks is the simplest way to handle the books for most small companies. You enter your expenses and income, and TinyBooks does the rest. Current and year-to-date "on-the-fly" totals are continually displayed. Fully automatic bar-charting of all expense and income accounts make the determination of monthly trends intuitively obvious. A fully non-modal Reports Window offers easy standard and custom reporting and searching. All transactions are easily exportable to other programs as standard tab-delimited text files. Expense, income and special mileage entry forms can be printed for "off line" entry of data as desired. Non-fiscal years are supported, as is the concept of recurring expenses. TinyBooks includes a Professional Invoice Printer, that is as easy to use as the rest of the program. It prints professional-looking invoices on plain white paper. No special, expensive forms are required. These invoices can also be customized with your own logo, fonts, etc. TinyBooks also includes intuitive support for handling virtually any kind of taxes from any country, including State Sales Taxes, GST (Goods and Service Taxes), PST (Provincial Sales Taxes), VAT (Value Added Taxes) and more. TinyBooks, based on years of experience "doing the books", is written exclusively for the Macintosh (OS9 and OSX) and is available now.

I'm not much of an accountant and was looking for something really simple to keep track of the accounts for my family trust. I have used MYOB in the past but didn't feel like spending real money on something and, based on some of the reviews above I gave TinyBooks a go. Well it sure is simple. I had a few questions for Ken, the developer and he replied within minutes!

I'm sure he won't mind me quoting him this piece of a response - it certainly summs up the whole experience.

It's so simple it's almost embarrassing. It simply tallies the totals of various accounts, all of which are either Deductible or Non-Deductible Expenses and Taxable or Non-Taxable Income. Profit is calculated by subtracting the total of Deductible Expenses from the Total of Taxable Income. If THAT is understood, you have the basis that you'll need to understand all of TinyBooks. This also implies that NON-deductible expenses and NON-taxable income, though tallied for your benefit, are NOT involved in any profit calculations at all. This gives you a great flexibility in the handling of your books. The real work is up to you...to properly determine your account list.

I tried out a couple of the other accounting apps listed here in VT with good star ratings but none of them came close to the simplicity of this one. Well worth the tiny shareware fee.

On the downside it lacks an asset registry, check printing, bill payment, payroll etc - but that's not really what it is for. It's a simple app for simple book keeping. I am happy I'l be able to print out a report and hand that over to my accountant come tax time and all will be sweet.

Cheers Dave

I can't find any way to contact the company or Ken or whoever supports TinyBooks, there's no address, phone or even email link on their web site.

None of the documentation notes whether or not checks can be printed and bills paid from within the application.

Does anybody know?

TinyBooks ReviewDon't knock it till you've tried it - Version: 3.0.7, 8/15/2006 02:24PM PST

I run two small businesses here in the UK, and have been maths phobic since my schooldays. I've tried both Quicken and MYOB and they are not intuitive enough for someone who dislikes swirling around in figures and invoices, and who doesn't have hours and hours spare to learn them and tailor them to my work.
I downloaded Tinybooks and literally within 5 minutes began putting my accounts together. I now spend less than 15 minutes per day inputting my 'ins and outs' and I have everything at my fingertips. I have had only two queries and Ken was right back at me with the answer the same day.
Compared to what my local accountant quoted me, I've now saved myself £440 this year alone - and my self generated tax return sailed through.
Try it - If you don't download it, you won't know what we're all talking about.
